Spotify was sputtering Sunday morning, with thousands of users reporting technical problems accessing the streaming service.
User error reports for Spotify began spiking around 10:45 ET a.m. on Sept. 29, according to uptime monitoring service Downdetector. The number of complaints reached more than 9,000 by 11 a.m. and over 15,000 as of 11:35 a.m., per Downdetector. In Spotify’s desktop app, some users were greeted with the error message, “Something went wrong,” and attempts to play songs and albums were unsuccessful. The streamer’s smartphone apps were unresponsive as well for many users.
The user reports on Downdetector spanned the U.S., with issues also reported by Spotify listeners in Canada and other countries.
On Sunday, the Spotify Cares customer-service account on X posted at 12:15 p.m. ET, “We’re aware of some issues right now with the app and are checking them out!”
In replies to some users on X complaining that the service wasn’t working, the Spotify Cares account suggested reinstalling the app to see if that would resolve the issues. The support team also recommended that users try logging out, restarting their device and logging back in.
Spotify — like every other internet-delivered service of significant scale — has experienced intermittent outages in the past. In March 2022, for example, the service’s users encountered problems logging in, with Spotify saying their username and password were incorrect; those issues were resolved after about an hour and a half.
As of the end of June, Spotify reported 626 million total monthly active users, a sequential gain of 11 million, including 246 million Premium subscribers (adding 7 million in the second quarter). The company reported a record quarterly net profit of €274 million on revenue of €3.81 billion, up 20% year over year.
