Anora, Emilia Pérez, and The Substance emerged as early awards season contenders from the Cannes Film Festival. Then came the fall festival circuit, where Conclave, The Brutalist, I’m Still Here, and others entered the race. They were followed by Wicked and A Complete Unknown, which didn’t play at festivals but made a huge splash with their debuts late in the year.
Nearly each of those movies has picked up honors at various awards ceremonies and festivals. Heading into Oscars weekend, Best Picture seems to be tipping in favor of Anora — but could The Brutalist, Conclave, or A Complete Unknown take home the top prize? Anora‘s Mikey Madison won at the BATFAs and Spirit Awards, but The Substance star Demi Moore won at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. And best actor could go a couple of different ways: Globes and BAFTA winner Adrien Brody, SAG winner Timothée Chalamet, or Ralph Fiennes, who also took home a SAG Award as part of Conclave‘s ensemble.
