A pair of homeowners thought they had a good relationship with their neighbor, until she started cursing them out over their plantings.
The couple shared their shocking run-in with the “neighbor on the side of our house whose driveway is next to our house” on the “Neighbors from H—” Reddit forum. “We even got them fruits and chocolate when we closed on the house to be neighborly,” the original poster (OP) writes.
Excited to make the place their own, the new homeowners “planted small compacta hollies,” a boxwood-like shrub that is not prickly, in a one-foot-tall raised garden to make a tiny hedge “well within” their property line. However, the elderly woman next door was not a fan.
“‘Karen’ decides to come out today to curse us out, name called us (b—-, witch, s—– neighbor, FU, etc.) for planting the shrubs in our raised garden as it interferes with them opening their car door,” the OP claimed.

The OP adds: “They even claim we are making their lives miserable and creating a dangerous tripping hazard when they climb into our garden to get in and out. I am beyond myself at the entitlement and unreasonableness.”
“Karen said we are the [worst] neighbors ever and [she] hopes all our plants die,” she adds. “Even went as far as threatening us, stating that we will be miserable living here… She’s 69 [years old] and acts out like an unhinged child/maniac.”
The confrontation got so heated, it drew another community member outside.
“Of course, she yelled at him too, telling him to leave and mind his own business because she’s ‘been living on the block for 30 years,’” the homeowner writes.
The poster says she and her husband are looking into installing a four-foot-fence in the front yard as a preventative measure from further landscaping disputes, but “no one on the block has one in the front, it would look odd.”
“The stuff she says is mind boggling and really disrespectful,” the homeowner concluded their post.
Fellow forum users had plenty to say in the comments about who was in the wrong.
“With this information in mind, I’d be building a fence, specifically to inconvenience the awful neighbors,” one writes.
Others want the homeowners to get back at the neighbor with some lawful hardscaping. One suggests: “Check zoning, get permits, then build a rock wall as close to the property line as possible. Enjoy watching her angrily slam her door into granite.”
Another person suggested adding cameras, with a comedic twist: “Pink flamingos lined up in the garden looking at them. Bonus points if you put glow-in-the-dark google eyes on them.”
