The Green Bay Packers look to extend their home winning streak to 14 games when they face the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football. The Packers (0-1) have not lost at home since a 28-22 decision to the Minnesota Vikings in 2020. The Bears (1-0) would like nothing better than to reverse that trend. They have not beaten Green Bay in coach Matt LeFleur’s tenure with the Packers and have not beaten Green Bay since a 24-17 win in Chicago on Dec. 16, 2018. Why the Packers can cover
Green Bay boasts a solid defense, led by linebacker Rashan Gary. Gary recorded seven tackles, including three solo stops at Minnesota last week. He also had one tackle for loss and one sack for eight yards. Gary had eight sacks in eight home games a year ago, and has recovered two fumbles in his past three games against the Bears. In 16 games last season, Gary made 47 tackles, including 27 solo, to go along with 9.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Also powering the defense is linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, who led the Packers with 11 tackles and had a tackle for loss at Minnesota. He had 82 tackles (10.3 per game) in eight home games last season, including a 2021 season-high 16 tackles in the last meeting against Chicago. For the year, Campbell had a team-high 146 tackles, including 102 solo. He also added two sacks, six tackles for loss, and five pass breakups, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Why the Bears can cover
Quarterback Justin Fields will look to build on a solid rookie campaign, which saw him play in 12 games. He completed 159 of 270 passes (58.9 percent) for 1,870 yards and seven touchdowns. He threw 10 interceptions for a rating of 73.2. This will be Fields’ third game against Green Bay. In an October loss to the Packers in Chicago last year, he completed 16 of 27 passes (59.3 percent) for 174 yards, one touchdown and one interception. In the December loss at Green Bay, Fields completed 18 of 33 passes (54.6 percent) for 224 yards and two touchdowns.
Running back David Montgomery led Chicago in rushing in 2021, playing in 13 games. He carried 225 times for 849 yards (3.8 average) and seven touchdowns. Against San Francisco in the opener, he was held to 26 yards rushing, but caught a team-high three passes for 24 yards. In one game against the Packers a year ago, Montgomery carried 10 times for 42 yards and had six receptions for 39 yards.
