Woodhead, USA Water Polo out of medal contention with loss to Spain – Marin Independent Journal

San Anselmo’s Dylan Woodhead and the U.S. Men’s Water Polo team were knocked out of medal contention by Spain, 12-8, in the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday night.

The game was tied at 6-6 at halftime before Spain took a 7-6 advantage into the fourth quarter, where it began to pull away from the Americans late. A two-meter goal at the 3:18 mark gave Spain a 10-7 lead and few big big saves down the stretch from Spanish goalkeeper Daniel Lopez Pinedo sealed the win.

Spain, the heavy favorite, advances to the semifinals while the U.S. will play in the 5th-place game on Thursday at 2:20 a.m. PDT.

Woodhead, a former standout at Archie Williams and Stanford, was in the starting lineup for Team USA but did not score.

-The U.S. Baseball team hung on to beat the Dominican Republic 3-1 on Tuesday to keep their gold medal hopes alive. After losing to Japan in its previous game, the U.S. needed to win its following two games to move out of the elimination bracket. With one win out of the way, Team USA and San Anselmo’s Joe Ryan advance to the semifinals where they will face the loser of the Japan-South Korea game on Thursday at 3 a.m. PDT.
