Winston-Salem: Church’s director of finance embezzles over $27,000

A woman fraudulently obtained over $27,000 from a church while employed as the church’s director of finance, police said. The Winston-Salem Police department began an investigation at the request of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte and members of the St. Leo the Great Catholic Church on Springdale Avenue.Information about possible fraudulent activity of a member and Director of Finance of the church was provided to detectives.Marilyn Veronica Bertelsen, 61, was identified as the individual. After receiving reports, detectives determined that Bertelsen fraudulently obtained a total of $27,930.03 from St. Leo the Great Catholic Church from Feb 15, 2018, until March 17, 2020. On Friday, detectives arrested Bertelsen and charged her with three felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense.She was detained in the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center and issued a $7,500 bond. In a statement, the church’s Father Gober said that the church was fully reimbursed for the financial loss by their insurance.”Be assured that no other former or current staff were involved in this matter in any way,” Gober said.Anyone with any information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police Department at 336-773-7700.
