I cover new tech trends for a living. Yes, it’s exciting work, but by Friday every week, I’m seriously screen fatigued. It’s like I’m addicted to Google News’ endless feed. There’s always one more story I should check, one more thing I should add to my to-do list. Without my phone, it’s like I’m missing something, and that makes me uncomfortable. I know I’m not the only one who remembers a time before the internet was on every device. That’s why the new Light Flip phone really stuck with me.
It’s not that it’s nostalgic. It’s that it’s one of the few new phones that isn’t begging me to spend more time staring at it. In fact, it’s a phone I could see myself pivoting to, for real.
The pitch is almost insulting, and that’s the point
Light built its reputation on the Light Phone, a phone-shaped object that does the opposite of what every other phone company sells you. There’s no feed or infinite scroll, no notification that’s nudging you to open an app (something I always fall for). The Light Flip phone takes that same restraint and puts it into a flip phone form factor—a design that feels surprisingly intentional today.
Unlike a lot of dumb phones out there, Light Flip wants you to use it. For that reason, it has a real 2.8-inch OLED display, 5G, and Bluetooth 5.0. Yep, it even has a headphone jack and runs on a MediaTek chip with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It’s a modern phone, but refuses to monopolize your attention.
There are also nine speed dials. A satisfying snap to end a call (does Gen Z even know how satisfying it is to snap a phone shut after a particularly infuriating call?) which everyone should experience. There’s a calculator, calendar, alarm, weather, and not much else. And actually, I think I could live with just those apps.
The price makes it harder to dismiss
The Light Flip phone starts at $299 unlocked, or $39 a month on a two-year plan through Light itself. That’s Light’s cheapest device yet. Heck, it’s probably one of the most compelling $300 phones I’ve seen this year, and that’s important to note here. The Light Flip phone isn’t a luxury detox object for people who can pay to disappear. It’s priced like a phone I’d actually give my kid, or buy for myself on a whim.
This is bigger than one flip phone
Apple, Google, and Samsung are pouring money into AI features that promise to make our phones even more central to our daily lives. At the same time, products like the Light Flip phone suggest there’s also a growing audience looking for the opposite: fewer distractions and a healthier relationship with tech.
I probably won’t give up my smartphone anytime soon. But for the first time in years, I looked at a new phone announcement and thought, “That might actually help me spend less time on a phone.” Ironically, that makes the Light Flip phone one of the most interesting devices I’ve seen all year.
