‘DC’s League of Super-Pets’

106 minutes | Rated PG

Most people are familiar with the relationship of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. There is one other companion that has been with Clark even longer, Krypto. Superman’s canine pal takes center stage in the new film “DC’s League of Super Pets.”

The film begins on Krypton with a baby Kal-El. His parents Jor-El and Lara are preparing to send their son into space to avoid their fate as the ill-fated planet is destroyed. They try to prevent Krypto from joining their son in the tiny spaceship but he will not be stopped.

Krypto makes the journey to Earth and grows up with Clark in Smallville and stays with him as he grows to become Superman. Everything is going well for the duo until Clark proposes to Lois. This leads to uncertainty for Krypto. What will happen to their friendship?

A depressed Krypto, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, roams the streets where he eventually meets up with a group of shelter animals. This group consists of Ace, a boxer, voiced by Kevin Hart; PB, a pig voiced by Vanessa Bayer; Chip, a squirrel, voiced by Diego Luna; and Merton, a turtle voiced by Natasha Lyonne.

One day while thwarting Lex Luthor’s plot to gain superpowers using Kryptonite there is an accident. Lulu, a guinea pig, voiced by Kate McKinnon, that is being used for tests by Luthor, and the shelter animals are caught in a blast and receive powers, while Krypto loses his.

Lulu manages to capture the Justice League as a part of her plot to rescue Luthor, voiced by Marc Maron. Can Krypto and his new found friends manage to rescue the Justice League and stop Lulu and Luthor?

“DC’s League of Super-Pets” is an entertaining but uneven movie. It is primarily the chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart that carries the movie. Without these two, the movie would be a rather flat and generic children’s super-hero movie. The story is fine, and the other actors do a good job, it’s just something between these two that makes the movie special.

“DC’s League of Super-Pets” is rated PG for action, mild violence, language, and rude humor. There is a scene in which Ace uses an expletive that is bleeped. I overheard a nearby youngster remark to his parent, “There was a bad-word.” Some of the humor is closer to being more PG-13. This youngster’s reaction to the bleeped word leads me to the conclusion that there may be some content that is inappropriate for sensitive younger kids.

I rate “DC’s League of Super-Pets” three out of five speeding turtles. While I enjoyed it, it may not be for everyone.
