In 2023, fashion will once again take center stage for both men and women at the Kentucky Derby.
Sure, we all come to historic Churchill Downs to watch the thoroughbreds race, but make no mistake, looking the part goes hand-in-hand with the day at the track.
Here’s a quick list of what to wear and not wear on Kentucky Derby weekend in Louisville.
What kind of hat should I wear to the Kentucky Derby?
Hats aren’t technically mandatory at the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, but they might as well be. Most Derby-goers do attend the races sporting some type of head accessory.
While men don’t have nearly as many style options as women, a lightweight straw bowler or fedora is always popular and in style.
On ladies, you’ll see a little bit of everything at the horse races, from elegant to outlandish. Most seasoned Kentucky Derby fans chose a style that fits best in the section where they have tickets.
If you are seated indoors on Millionaires Row, a large brim or a stylish fascinator are great choices. That’s because you don’t have to worry about rain ruining your investment (yes, Kentucky Derby hats are expensive) or the wind blowing it away.

In other “less-dressy” spots, smaller fascinators might be a better bet. Wherever you are seated, keep in mind, you’ll be wearing the headpiece throughout a very long day — so make certain it’s as comfortable as it is stylish.
As we mentioned hats, can be expensive and cost hundreds of dollars but there’s nothing wrong with swapping hats with friends and family. Trust us, if you are having a good time, no one will remember who wore which hat last year. You can also make one yourself. Pro tip: You can easily clean last year’s sweat-soaked interior ribbon with a toothbrush and Woolite. You can also clean dirt and stains off of a straw hat.
What kind of outfit should I wear to the Kentucky Derby?
The Kentucky Derby is a fashion spectacle. You’ll see women in everything from spring dresses to fitted suits. It does vary by where you’re sitting, so take a look at your ticket and be sure the outfit you’re choosing will be appropriate. (i.e., you’ll regret stiletto heels in the infield — or anywhere, really. It’s a long day on your feet, ladies!)
Guys tend to “go all out” in lightweight sports jackets and slacks. They may opt for preppy Bermuda shorts and a sports jacket in the infield and absolutely everyone wears sunglasses. Sensational neckwear is the easiest way to make your Kentucky Derby outfit as unique as you are, whether it’s a luxurious silk traditional tie or a Southern-inspired bow tie.
Also, this event takes place in the spring, so think about pastels for your outfit to capture some red-carpet Instagram-worthy pics.

One word of warning, ladies. While you will see fashionable jumpsuits and rompers at every turn, is that really what you want to wrestle with in a public restroom where the waiting line can be 15 minutes or longer?
Pro tip: Try Rent the Runway for a designer dress that you don’t have to spend a month’s rent to purchase. You get the dress (and/or accessories) for four days and have to give it back, but it’s well worth it. Insurance is included, just in case you get stuck in a muddy situation.
Is there a dress code at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby?
Yes. There is an official dress code in some areas of Churchill Downs, depending on where you’ve snagged tickets.
If you’re a first-timer, make sure you understand the environment of your seats. Are you in the air-conditioned comfort of Millionaires Row? On a picnic blanket weathering the elements in the infield? In a covered clubhouse box … or an uncovered one? If you don’t know, find out and dress accordingly.
Here’s a brief breakdown of the various dress codes in the seated boxes at the track:
Business casual dress (meaning shirts with collars for guys; no denim, athletic shoes, or “inappropriate” clothing) is required in the Turf Club, Trophy Room, and Millionaires Row, where you can split your time between air-conditioned dining rooms and outdoor terraces, some of which are covered. Guys, a jacket is required in the Derby Room and The Mansion.
The Churchill Downs website details what is appropriate in each section of the track, as well as several areas where “worn or torn garments, halter tops, athletic wear, frayed or torn denim and midriff tops, are considered inappropriate attire.”
If you’ve got tickets to the clubhouse or grandstand seats (which are also reserved), casual attire is permitted, although you’re unlikely to see any of it.

And if you’re in the infield, there’s no dress code, but plenty of people dress up. Just remember, you’ll be walking a ton and sitting on the grass … or mud. So, if you insist on heels, they should be practical wedges and not crazy-high. Or skip them altogether for pretty sandals or flats. There are even flats that fold up, which could come in handy if you can stash them in your bag.
In fact, no matter how high-fashion you are dressed, most women bring a pair of flip-flops to trek from the walk back to the car at the end of the races. There’s no shame in that.
Pro-tip: If it calls for rain, pick up some cute rain boots that match your outfit. Be sure to pack a poncho, as umbrellas are not allowed at the track.
What are some other fashion tips for the Kentucky Derby?
First, don’t forget to bring sunscreen. If the weather is nice, you will get burnt. You’re outside for nearly 12 hours, after all. Sunscreen is smart, even underneath your makeup, ladies and gents.
Second, invest in a makeup setting spray. This is great for women who don’t want to ruin the makeup they applied in the wee hours of the morning. It will keep your makeup fresh for hours — great for those who sweat or if you’re worried about mascara streaks when it rains.
Third, downsize your purse. Trust us, you don’t want to juggle a gigantic bag along with your mint julep and racing program. Facility restrictions forbid purses larger than 12 inches in any direction.
The small purse size means you can carry only the essentials (cardigan, sunscreen, flip flops, lipstick, sunglasses case, etc.)

Four, be prepared for any type of weather. You really never know what the weather is going to be like in Kentucky in early May, so dress for anything that Mother Nature can throw at you — hail, rain, humidity or frigid temps. A cardigan or wrap is great for your shoulders, for the cold or for covering up sunburned skin.
You aren’t allowed to carry an umbrella, so pack a light poncho for those unexpected showers. It doesn’t take up much space, and you can use it to cover damp seats.
Pro Tip: Keep a close eye on the weather forecast up until the moment you leave for the track. If you are traveling to Louisville from out of town come prepared with outfits you can layer — just in case.
What items should I not wear to Kentucky Derby?
Stilettos. We can’t emphasize this fashion tip enough. If you have to have those babies for a little more height, we suggest throwing them on just for initial pictures, then leaving them at home. Consider something a little lower with more surface area and less likelihood of getting caught between cobblestones. If you love heels, try a chunky block version that offers stability and style.
Avoid jeans or athletic shoes. You can technically wear them in the infield, but sandals, loafers, flats or driving moccasins are all better low-key options.
Ladies, skip your shapewear. While they may be standard wear for these kinds of dressy events, if it’s hot, you might want to reconsider. Try a looser dress for the often-uncomfortable Kentucky Derby Day.
