Western Carolina University will offer a new online option for students seeking a
bachelor’s degree in finance with a concentration in financial planning, beginning
in the fall semester 2021, for both traditional and nontraditional students.
Students who complete the concentration are then eligible to take the Certified Financial
Planner Certification exam and pursue careers in financial planning, stock brokerage,
insurance and other financial services.
“The online format permits a flexibility for students to accommodate them without
being tied to a classroom location while still receiving high quality instruction
and support,” said Todd Creasy, professor and director of the School of Accounting,
Finance, Information Systems and Business Law. “The demand for personal financial
advisers is increasing nationwide. Likewise, WCU is seeing an increase in demand for
financial planning courses. This CFP concentration is an excellent fit and will serve
the region for the foreseeable future.”
WCU has been listed among the nation’s best providers of online degree programs by
U.S. News & World Report and is the only Certified Financial Planning Board-certified
bachelor’s degree program in the state.
The Certified Financial Planner concentration is accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
