Volkswagen reaches deal with union to keep German plants open

Sir Keir Starmer has handed out peerages to a string of allies, union bosses and former Labour advisers.

The UK prime minister has elevated 30 people to the House of Lords in a list published on Friday, including four former senior union officials and former Labour general secretary David Evans.

He also gave peerages to Deborah Mattinson, his former strategy director, and Anji Hunter, a former senior adviser to Tony Blair in Downing Street.

Sue Gray, his former chief of staff, and a raft of former Labour MPs who left parliament in July, including Thangam Debbonaire, Lyn Brown, Julie Elliott and Kevin Brennan, were also named in the list.

Kemi Badenoch nominated six Tories for peerages, while the Lib Dems were granted two.
