Veterans past, present and future will be the spotlight at the National World War II Museum Thursday and Friday during the Veterans Day Commemoration Ceremony and related programing.
Linda Hope, daughter of legendary troop entertainer Bob Hope, will be on hand to share her father’s correspondence with a GI.
Service members and veterans will be granted free admission to the Magazine Street complex that will be the location of several events.
Thursday
- Musical performances: 10:30 a.m. and noon, US Freedom Pavilion. The Preservation Hall All-Stars get the morning started with 1940s-era tunes.
- Commemoration Ceremony: 11 a.m., US Freedom Pavilion. Jointly hosted by the Mayor’s Military Advisory Committee, the event celebrates the qualities of the service and includes Linda Hope discussing her father’s efforts. The ceremony concludes with an announcement regarding the museum’s future. Registration is requested.
- Knit Your Bit scarf distribution:Â noon, US Freedom Pavilion. Scarves created for the veterans through a museum program will be distributed by the staff.
- Victory Belles: 2 p.m. BB’s Stage Door Canteen. The vocal trio perform songs of the war era. $15, with free tickets for veterans through the Bob and Delores Hope Tickets for Troops Fund.Â
- Author presentation:Â 5 p.m. reception, 6 p.m. program; US Freedom Pavilion. Martha Bolton discusses her book, co-authored with Linda Hope, “Dear Bob…” with curator Kim Guise.
Friday
- Victory Ball:Â 7 p.m., US Freedom Pavilion. Gala reception with food and beverages form the American Sector Restaurant & Bar, with live entertainment, dancing and access to the museum. There’s also a salute to veterans and service members by Maj. Gen. James E. Livingston, honorary chair. Tickets start at $50. victory-ball.org.
