TROY — Juan Santana, Juan Silverio, Brad Zunica and Willy Garcia all homered, leading the Tri-City ValleyCats to a 10-3 victory over the Sussex County Miners in the first game of a Frontier League doubleheader Thursday at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
The Miners took the nightcap 6-2.
In the opener, Santana hit a solo homer in the first inning to put the ValleyCats up 1-0. Brantley Bell scored on an error later in the inning.
The ValleyCats drilled three homers in the third inning. Silverio hit a two-run shot, and Zunica followed with a solo homer. Garcia added a two-run blast later in the inning.
Tri-City scored three times in the fifth on a Santana RBI double and a Bell two-run double.
In Game 2, homers by Jawuan Harris, Carson McCurdy and Nick Garland lifted the Miners to the win.
ATHLETICS WIN
ALBANY — Nick Hansen’s two-out RBI single capped a two-run rally in the top of the seventh Wednesday and lifted the Albany Athletics to a 3-2 Albany Twilight League win over the Albany Thunder at Bellizzi Field at Plumeri Sports Complex.
The victory extended the Athletics’ ATL winning streak to 29 games dating back to the final game of the 2019 season.
LAURENDEAU NAMED FINALIST
Marika Laurendeau of The College of Saint Rose women’s soccer team is one of three finalists for the Northeast-10 Conference Woman of the Year Award, the league announced.
Eligible candidates for the award are “graduating student-athletes who have exhausted their athletic eligibility and who have exhibited sustained excellence in competition, the classroom, and in their community service endeavors.”
An MBA student, Laurendeau was named the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American of the Year and a first-team All-America pick this past season. Also among her various honors, she was twice named the NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Year and a first-team all-conference pick.
Laurendeau, a three-time captain, helped lead the Golden Knights to the NCAA championship tournament final. She finished 16th in the country with a 0.57 goals-against-average and recorded 11 shutouts to rank eighth in that category during an 18-2-4 season.
As a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Laurendeau helped out with a variety of activities, including book drives and a walk for cancer awareness, and also volunteered at local schools amongst other community-service activities.
Laurendeau is joined on the ballot by New Haven volleyball player Jessica Akiona and Adelphi lacrosse player Jackie Brown. The winner will be named June 9.
SIENA’S PRINSLOO RECOGNIZED
Siena College women’s water polo’s Bianca Prinsloo was named Wednesday an Association of Collegiate Water polo Coaches All-America Honorable Mention.
A senior attacker and team captain, Prinsloo led the Saints with 95 points during the 2022 season, including 66 goals and a team-best 29 assists over 29 matches played.
The Johannesburg, South Africa native notched 12 hat tricks on the season, including three games with seven goals each. The senior finished the 2022 campaign ranked 10th all-time in program history in points (228), ninth in shots (324) and tied for ninth in goals scored (146).
