Union Pacific Corporation: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Union Pacific Corporation (UNP -1.75%) reported record financial results driven by volume growth across its freight network. Long-term investors care because operational efficiency and network capacity let the railroad grow margins as volume expands over time. Three things management said on the earnings call stand out.

1. Operational Discipline Keeps Terminal Dwell Times Low

Operational efficiency determines how fast freight cars cycle through rail yards. Management reduced terminal dwell, the time train cars spend idling in yards before moving, below 20 hours for four straight quarters, enabling the network to handle 6% higher volume without operational drag.

Freight car velocity increased 1% to 228 miles per day, driven by a 2% improvement in terminal dwell. This marks our fourth straight quarter of terminal dwell below 20 hours, demonstrating our ability to run an efficient network while handling higher demand.
— Eric Gehringer, Executive Vice President of Operations

2. Proposed Norfolk Southern Combination Aims to Lower Supply Chain Costs

Combining rail networks with Norfolk Southern creates a transcontinental system connecting Western and Eastern markets without handoffs. Eliminating interchange delays reduces transit times for shippers, making rail transport far more competitive against long-haul trucking.

It will lower transportation costs and provide faster, more seamless rail service options that enable our customers to compete and help keep goods affordable for American consumers.
— Jim Vena, Chief Executive Officer

3. Domestic Intermodal Business Drives Record Volume Growth

Domestic intermodal shipments, which involves moving freight containers via truck and train, reached a fifth consecutive record quarter as shippers converted highway truck traffic to rail. Service reliability and buffer resources enabled the company to capture market share from highway carriers.

Domestic intermodal delivered its fifth consecutive record quarter in both volume and revenue. Our foundation of service, combined with strong business development and the deployment of buffer resources, enabled 13% volume growth.
— Kenny Rocker, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales

Looking Ahead

Freight demand accelerates across intermodal and industrial markets, and leadership isn’t hiding its satisfaction about network execution. Maintaining buffer locomotives and trained crews provides capacity to handle surge traffic smoothly.

We feel very confident that we have sufficient resources that we can deploy and continue to handle the growth seamlessly and continue to put up the great numbers, the record results that we have done so far. But we are wanting to make sure we maintain that surge buffer.
— Jennifer Hamann, Chief Financial Officer

Management is watching core operating ratio, an efficiency metric showing expenses as a percentage of revenue, to ensure pricing discipline offsets diesel cost swings. Long-term value rests on leveraging train length efficiency, terminal technology, and single-line service advantages to win freight from highways.

Overall, we are delivering strong financial results in 2026 as we consistently execute on the three key levers for our railroad success: volume, pricing, and productivity.
— Jennifer Hamann, Chief Financial Officer
