Trails Day scheduled for June 4 | Entertainment

Highland’s annual Trails Day has been scheduled for Saturday, June 4, on the City Creek Trail. The Highland Community Trails Committee selected the date and trail during its March 10 meeting, and the event plan is to go before city council for final approval on April 12.

This will be the 26th Trails Day, which was held annually until the cancellation of the 2020 event due to coronavirus protocols.

It’s an open invitation for the Highland community to enjoy the city’s trails together.

City Creek Trail is a 2.33-mile loop along the west and east banks of City Creek between Base Line and Highland Avenue.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. at the trail’s entrance on the north side of the Base Line bridge over City Creek. Community Trails Committee Chairman Robert La Chausse will open the event with a brief presentation about the trail and Highland’s trails system.

Prior to choosing City Creek Trail, several trails were considered by the committee including an unnamed trail within the property that was once going to be part of the failed Harmony residential development project, an unnamed trail within the Santa Ana River Wash and a trail off of Cone Camp Road.

City Creek Trail was selected over these underdeveloped trails in order to best highlight to guests what Highland’s trails system has to offer. City Creek Trail is a relatively level trail featuring numerous informational plaques providing details on the area’s historical significance.

City Creek Trail was last used for a Trails Day in 2019, shortly after the interpretive signs were first installed.

Also, several of the commissioners felt it would be better to invite people to trails they would have regular legal access to, unlike the Harmony and wash trails. Those trails are on property of local water districts and would only be open to the public on the day of the event, by special permission.

The commissioners also expressed interest in holding a second Trails Day coinciding with National Take a Hike Day, which is Nov. 17. Details for that event will be ironed out later in the year.
