For as long has he has been bringingĀ Andor to life, Tony Gilroy has championed the series as one that opens the gateway forĀ Star Wars to explore various genres it rarely touches on in TV and film. And now, according to the man himself, the franchise might actually be doing that.
Speaking to Business Insider at a recentĀ Andor event in London ahead of the second seasonās premiere later this month, Gilroy said responded to a question about a comment heād previously floated about Star Wars series heād like to see, including a horror story, saying āTheyāre doing that. I think theyāre doing that. I think thatās in the works, yeah.ā
Speaking to SFX Magazine back in March, Gilroy had previously joked thatĀ Andorās success should pave the way for a sitcom or horror project. āI always fantasized that the show would break new ground, that someone would be able to make a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie. I think the first thing I said to Kathy [Kennedy] when she said they wanted to open a line, was, āCould you do a courtroom drama? And why not?ā Weāve worked really hard on Andor to make our lane, and itās up to other people now to find another way to do it.ā
If the horror project does now exist, Gilroy is seemingly not part of its production, going by his comments about being perfectly happy to round out his time on Star Wars withĀ Andorās completion. But if it does happen (a less-than-certain guarantee when it comes to Star Wars in recent times), at least the show will have completed its goals to getĀ Star Wars to push the scope and tones of the stories itās willing to tell outside of ancillary media.
io9 has reached out to Disney for comment and clarification on Gilroyās remarks, and will update this post when and if we hear back.
