Tiger Woods is back where he belongs, Augusta. And he’s brought the entire world of golf with him.
He might not be in front and remains at long-odds to win his sixth green jacket – that title goes to Im Sung-jae – but that doesn’t matter.

It’s not just the spring air that has those in Georgia with a spring in their steps, it’s Woods’ return.
He announced it with some typical raw emotion: “Ah f**k off!” he bemoaned as his ball failed to stay up on the ninth. Ultimately, he saved par.
Woods, playing his first tournament since his horrific car accident more than a year ago, carded a one-under 71.
It has the 46-year-old in a tie for 10th.
Fresh from winning the Players Championship, Cam Smith is in a perfect position ahead of his second round and will start one shot off the pace at four-under par.
The Australian was primed to have the clubhouse lead, but double bogeyed 18 to card a 68.

Previous champions Dustin Johnson (2020) and Danny Willett (2016) are tied-third on three-under alongside a hot list including Joaquín Niemann and Scottie Scheffler.
But all eyes were on Woods during the opening round, with the list of those who he bettered including last year’s winner Hideki Matsuyama and past champions Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy.
Others include Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas. Go figure!

“To finish in the red today after as long a lay-off as I’ve had and not being in competitive golf—I don’t really consider a scramble in the PNC, it is competitive, but it’s not like this—this is totally different,” Woods said.
“But to play this golf course and to do what I did today, to make—to hit the shots in the right spots—I know where to hit it to a lot of these pins, and I miss in the correct spots and give myself good angles. I did that all day, and I was able to make a few putts and end up in the red like I am now.”

Woods knows he faces a mountain ahead of him to make the cut and complete four-round marathon, let alone win it.
“I’m going to be sore, yes,” he said.
“That’s just the way it is. But the training cycles that we’ve had to make sure that I have the stamina to keep going—and this is only one round. We’ve got three more to go. There’s a long way to go and a lot of shots to be played … as I said with all the hard work, my leg, it’s going to be difficult for the rest of my life. That’s just the way it is, but I’m able to do it.
“That’s something I’m very lucky to have this opportunity to be able to play, and not only that, to play in the Masters and to have this type of reception.”
