MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan fans can take advantage of an opportunity to honor a Chippewa luminary when softball coach Margo Jonker is inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

 

Jonker, who is among the winningest coaches in college softball history, will be inducted into the prestigious hall during a ceremony on Oct. 1 at MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit. She is part of a class that includes former Detroit Lion Calvin Johnson, former Detroit Piston Chauncy Billups, gold-medal winning Olympian Jordan Wieber, and NBA star Shane Battier.

 

Jonker will also be inducted into the CMU Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 15. That ceremony is free to attend and is set for McGuirk Arena starting at 6:30 p.m. She is joined in the Class of 2020 by women’s basketball coach Sue Guevara, football players Joe Staley and Dan LeFevour, gymnast Katie Simon, and baseball player Tyler Stovall.

 

Jonker, who retired after the 2019 season with a record of 1,268-808-7 record. Her victory total is first in Mid-American Conference history and is ninth in NCAA Division I history. In her 40 years in charge of the Chippewas, CMU won 10 MAC regular-season championships and made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances with one berth each in the NCAA Women’s College World Series and the AIAW College World Series.

 

Jonker was named the MAC Coach of the Year a record 10 times, was selected the NCAA Mideast Region Coach of the Year in 1987, and earned the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year in 1994 and in 2000. In 2008, CMU renamed its softball stadium in her honor.
