This gadget turns ‘anything’ into cotton candy

Can you make cotton candy out of Skittles?

Video Transcript

DILLON THOMPSON: This crazy, viral internet gadget says it can do something magical. Apparently, this thing can take any candy you want from your kitchen and turn into light, fluffy cotton candy. It sounds too good to be true, so we’re going to test it out to see how well this thing really works. Let’s do it.

So this gadget’s called the Nostalgia Countertop Cotton Candy Maker, and it’s supposed to be super easy to use. Basically, you just drop in your favorite candy in the center. It spins around, starts heating up, and the next thing you know, you have a big old stick of cotton candy to enjoy, just like you were at a carnival or circus or a festival.

And this is really good news for me because when I was a kid, my favorite thing in the world was to go to the carnival. And if this thing works, I’m going to be able to bring the carnival to my home. I’m going to have to start training carnival games, getting good at some circus tricks. But first, we have to see if this thing works. And to try it out, we’re going to test it with five different candies. Let’s get to it.

All right. So first up, we’ve popped in a couple of Jolly Ranchers, and watched this thing go to work. It was super easy and worked almost immediately, and next thing we knew, we had a red, strawberry-flavored spiderweb of cotton candy coming onto the cones that come with the machine.

Next, some hard butterscotch candy. Even though it’s kind of weird, this stuff worked really well, too. Then, I got a little crazy and tried making peppermint flavor cotton candy. This one also worked, and it actually made one of the biggest cones we got out of anything. After that, I decided to taste the rainbow for real by dropping in a handful of Skittles and making a full multi-color Skittles cone of cotton candy.

Lastly, I’m going totally off the deep end. We tried making chocolate cotton candy out of M&Ms by putting them in the middle of the machine and watching it spin around. We should note that Nostalgia does not suggest putting chocolate in this thing, but we tried it anyway. Do not try this at home. We are professional cotton candy makers here. And as it turned out, unfortunately, this thing did not work very well at all. It just kind of shot chocolate specks all over the place.

OK. So now that we’re done with a hard day of making cotton candy, it’s time to review this bad boy. We’re going compare this thing on two points of criteria– versatility, and of course, taste. First up, versatility. When it came to our candy test, it did pretty well. It got four out of five of our flavors. And to be fair, the M&Ms one was sort of a trick question. But we’re going to give this a 4 out of 5 for versatility.

Next, taste. I decided to take a bite out of each of these things when they were hot and ready to see how good cotton candy from regular candy actually is. All of them, honestly, tasted really good. Even the weird flavors like butterscotch and peppermint tasted pretty good. The only flaw in this was that there wasn’t enough of it. So for that reason alone, we’re going to give this a 4 out of 5 for taste.

Tallying up our points, this got an 8 out of 10 for the cotton candy maker. That is a pretty good score. To be honest, you can make almost any candy into cotton candy with this thing, which means I’m going to have to really brush up on my juggling. I’m going to have to learn a couple of new magic tricks, because the carnival is coming home, baby. I would definitely recommend trying one of these things out.
