The ‘Sekiro’ Anime Will Hit Theaters…in Japan

Last year, it was revealed FromSoftware’s 2019 game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was jumping to animation with the No Defeat anime. With a release window of sometime this year, it appears the anime is looking to get eyes on it by coming to the big screen.

On Friday, Kadokawa announced a three-week theatrical run for the series’ early episodes starting September 4. At time of writing, these screenings look to be exclusive to Japan, but it’s not the anime’s only showing. During France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival in June, No Defeat will screen out of competition in the “Midnight Special” category.

Sekiro: No Defeat is expected to release later in 2026 on Crunchyroll for non-Japanese territories. Hopefully those theatrical screenings expand outside Japan before the show hits television. Until then, might as well play (or replay) the game to get an idea of what to expect. And if either version of Sekiro’s not to your liking, there’s always Elden Ring, whose own film adaptation arrives in 2028.
