Have you heard the good word of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple? It sounds like a good, but not great amount of followers—sorry, “Jimmies”—did.
Per Variety, the zombie flick opened to $31.1 million worldwide. While domestic audiences only saw it to the tune of a projected $15 million, it fared better overseas, where it’s made $16.2 million across 61 international territories. That domestic take is behind the $20-22 million it was targeted to earn over the holiday, but it could have legs in the weeks ahead. What could certainly help it is word of mouth, funnily: it’s gotten a pretty positive reception from critics and audiences, so it’s possible people revisit the Bone Temple over the next several weeks.
Sony’s already committed to a third 28 Years Later, which’ll see the return of original 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy. It could be that coming out so soon after the first Years hurt this one, or it might also just be competition like Primate, No Other Choice, and Avatar: Fire and Ash. The latter’s expected to earn another $17.2 million domestic over the four-day weekend, bringing its total to $363.5 million domestic and $1.31 billion globally. For its fifth weekend in a row, Fire and Ash is still a money-maker for Disney, joined by Zootopia 2 now cementing itself as Hollywood’s highest-grossing animated movie ever.
