Be honest. Even though the photo here made it very obvious, you had to think about what the biggest movie of 2025 was, right? At first, maybe you thought Lilo & Stitch. That was a big hit. A Minecraft Movie, despite coming out earlier in the year, was also a smash. And how did that new Avatar movie do? It must have been big, right?
And while yes, all three of those movies made over $400 million domestically at the box office, it was Disney’s Zootopia 2 that topped them all, grossing about $426 million. That slithered past Minecraft, which did $424 million.
Zootopia 2 got to that spot because it stayed in theaters for a long time, but no more. Disney just announced that it’ll be on its streaming service, Disney+, starting on March 11. Here’s a fun video to announce the news.
It’s (Nick) wild to realize Zootopia 2 ended up topping the 2025 box office, but things get even crazier when you look internationally. The film made over three times its domestic gross internationally, for a grand total of about $1.86 billion. That on its own is just incredibly impressive. But it was not enough for the top spot. That goes to the animated film Ne Zha 2, which made about $2.26 billion, almost all of that internationally.
So, yes, Zootopia 2 was a massive hit. But is it a film deserving of that praise? Clearly, it’s very good, but upon a first watch, I did think it fell a little short of the original (which came out in 2016 and grossed a puny $1 billion globally). That’s why I’m actually looking forward to its streaming debut. It gives me an easy opportunity to see if the movie is better or worse than I remember it on first viewing. All that box office success certainly suggests it’s better.
Again, Zootopia 2, the highest-grossing domestic film of 2025, will be on Disney+ on March 11.
