‘Survivor 47’ contestants explain their biggest pet peeves (exclusive)

Pet peeves. Everybody has them. My wife, for instance, would probably tell you her pet peeve is the fact that her husband has been ignoring her to write obsessively about Survivor for the past 24 years. Fair.

Speaking of which — segue alert! — I asked the entire cast of Survivor 47 to reveal and explain their biggest pet peeves. Some of them are pretty universal, while others… not so much! So get away from all those slow walkers and folks that like to be tardy to the party and check out all the current and already voted-out contestants describing what drives them absolutely insane in the membrane.

Hot oil splattering me while cooking — making food should not cause me literal pain. And balloons popping, especially because it’s like some disease that plagues a room that once one balloon pops everyone decides to pop more. Why?! I refuse to accept that this is “fun.”

Sam Phalen

When people leave the sauna door open for too long while entering / exiting, wasting heat. Have some respect! Also, when people use an accent to say foreign words “correctly,” but they’re not from there. Like, why? Spoiled and overconfident sports fans. They don’t know how hard some of us have it!

Most humans in airports. The ones who line up when it isn’t their turn and block the way as though the plane will leave without them if they don’t storm the boarding gate. The ones who hog the entire arm rest and jab you with their sharp elbow when you’re seated next to them. The ones who take their shoes off, then put bare feet on the back of your armrest and touch you with their toes. Yuck!

Sol Yi

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Solomon ‘Sol’ Yi.

Put the damn shopping cart back where it belongs! Stop throwing gum away in the urinals! People have to take care of your laziness because of your lack of respect. Oh, and don’t be rude to people in the service industry! We are all people. Be kind to one another.

Sierra Wright

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Sierra Wright.

  1. Clapping when the plane lands… just, no.
  2. Slow walkers.
  3. Saying “no offense” or “I’m kidding” when you’re clearly not.
  4. Putting dirty dishes in the sink when the dishwasher is empty.

Andy Rueda

Grammar [know-it-alls]. In linguistics, we call them prescriptivists. To love language is to love language change and variety. If you get angry when kids come up with new words you don’t understand, or when a familiar word takes an additional meaning (say, “literally” as an emphasizer)… unfortunately, it is you who is wrong. I also don’t like when people walk directly behind me, or when people laugh sarcastically.

Caroline Vidmar

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Caroline Vidmar.

People who ask you to complete something by a deadline and then send a follow-up expecting you to be done before that deadline. I’m a busy person and its rude to expect I’d change my schedule just because you’d like something early.

Kyle Ostwald

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Kyle Ostwald.

My pet peeves are people sneezing and hearing people chew food. Sneezing drives me absolutely bonkers. It’s so gross. If someone sneezes in the store, I will avoid that area at all cost, even if it means that item is not getting checked off the shopping list. And hearing people chew food seriously turns my brain to static. I’ve gotten out of bed or even left the dinner table to avoid the sound of chewing — like, “Sorry, I’ve gotta pee…. again.”

Tiyana Hallums

  1. Entitled people. Being in customer service and being a flight attendant, I encounter a lot of these people who treat others badly just because we’re serving them. YUCK! Rude for no reason.
  2. People who don’t use their blinkers. Some people come to almost full stops with no explanation in order to turn or cut me off for funsies… what?
  3. People who make others feel lame for caring about a certain topic (a.k.a. judgmental people ) — ’nuff said.
  4. Loud talkers in public areas — everyone around you (whether it be in a restaurant, bar, public transport, etc.) is trying to have a conversation too, yet they’re basically yelling at their phone or yelling at their friends.

Gabe Ortis

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Gabe Ortis.

Passive aggression. It was sin No. 1 in my house growing up. Say what you mean, and we’ll deal with it. Open mic policy. It’s not someone else’s job to play detective about why YOU’RE upset.

Sue Smey

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Sue Smey.

One-uppers. Can’t stand having a conversation, and the person immediately needs to top your story. People who talk way too long, and even go off-topic because they just can’t stop speaking. People who can’t read the room. People who repeat the same story every time you see them.

Teeny Chirichillo

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Teeny Chirichillo.

Unoriginally, mine is when people are late. It’s not cute to me. I’m a Virgo and feel my punctuality is just about my biggest Virgo trait. My chronically late friends will tell you I turn a little crazy when they are slow or late, and to them I say, “So don’t be.” Pretty easy.

Rome Cooney

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Rome Cooney.

FaceTiming someone in a club. Someone eating food I ordered when you could have ordered it yourself. The fact motorcycles are legal (no seatbelt or body protection) but driving a car without a seatbelt is illegal. Those laws are an oxymoron that nobody brings up: safety first (unless it’s a motorcycle).

Anika Dhar

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Anika Dhar.

Slow drivers in the left lane! It gets me when processes aren’t working as efficiently as they possibly could be. Also, when people leave the tap water running when they aren’t using it. I grew up in an a very environmentally friendly household, so it is ingrained in my brain to always conserve.

Kishan Patel

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Kishan Patel.

Robert Voets/CBS

This might sound silly, but slow walkers. Like, I get “enjoy the journey” and all that, but some of us have places to be! In all seriousness, it’s probably more of folks being unaware socially and not recognizing how others navigate their lives — being oblivious and lacking emotional awareness.

Aysha Welch

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Aysha Welch.

Loud people in quiet places, loud chewers (because I don’t think hearing should be one of the senses engaged when eating), people who don’t understand personal space when you don’t have a close relationship with them, slow drivers in the fast lane.

TK Foster

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Terran ‘TK’ Foster.

Robert Voets/CBS

  1. People who talk too much. It’s just annoying and I lack patience at times.
  2. Know-it-alls. It just kills the motivation to want to converse.
  3. Unmotivated people. Complacent people can infest the minds of those around them.
  4. Chewing food with mouth open. It drives me crazy!
  5. When someone talks over me. I have a family full of talkers, but not many listeners, LOL. So I had a hard time getting a word out in any conversations with family.
  6. A person with too much energy all the time.

Jon Lovett

‘Survivor 47’ contestant Jon Lovett.

Robert Voets/CBS

Too many to list. I’m like a gay Larry David. But to name a few: People who cut lines and then act confused. People who bring a full cart to self-check-out at the grocery store. People who use their phones at red lights. And I’m sorry — I’M SORRY! — but people who are obsessed with horoscopes. You aren’t single because of Mercury.
