Just when you thought Masters of the Universe was going through the typical pre-release motions, it suddenly wound up with some IMAX screenings under its loincloth.
Over the weekend, IMAX announced the Amazon film would come to the high-priced format, complete with a new poster hyping it up. As IGN notes, Masters isn’t a movie that’s been promoted with this in mind, and studios love to give audiences a heads-up well in advance. Pick a blockbuster in the last couple years, you’ve more than likely seen a poster or ad in the theater telling you to see it on the biggest screen possible. So what’s the deal here?

The answer to that seems to be The Mandalorian and Grogu, which saw a big domestic drop in its second weekend thanks to the dual hits of Backrooms and Obsession. IMAX hasn’t given a specific reason for the shakeup, but that hasn’t stopped online speculation from trying to connect some dots: Mando’s not doing so hot, so there can’t be any harm in letting Masters of the Universe take those theaters instead, especially when positive buzz suggests it could be a hit.
We’ll see how much IMAX contributed to the opening weekend of Masters of the Universe next Monday. Until then, you can go ahead and buy tickets for it or whatever format you want to see it in.
