Sunak also defended his economic record, saying that inflation was back to normal and the economy was growing again.
“I know there’s more to do, but the question going forward is do we build on that progress . . . or do we put it all at risk. All the Labour party offers is uncertainty.”
On taxation, he said that as chancellor he had seen the country through the challenges of the pandemic and provided help with energy bills as prices rose because of the war in Ukraine.
“Those are once in a century shocks . . . that’s what leadership is about.”
He also said that the tax rate for the average earner was at its lowest in decades. “I want to give people financial security”.
