Stanley Cup champion Barclay Goodrow named Sport Aurora’s athlete of the year

Two Stanley Cup rings translates into one Sport Aurora athlete of the year award.

Aurora’s Barclay Goodrow has been named recipient of the sport advocacy group’s top athlete award after helping the Tampa Bay Lightning to the National Hockey League’s top prize for a second straight season.

The award recognizes achievement by an Aurora athlete for the 12-month period from Sept. 1, 2020 to Aug. 31, 2021.

Goodrow, 28, was a member of the Lightning for a second consecutive Stanley Cup championship in July as the Lightning defeated Montreal Canadiens in a five-game series.

The right winger was also a member of the Lightning for their 2020 championship run after being acquired in a trade deadline deal from the San Jose Sharks.

The York Simcoe Express triple-A hockey program graduate signed a three-year deal as a free agent with the New York Rangers during the off-season.

To date, Goodrow has seven points, including three goals, in 16 games this season for the Rangers entering action Nov. 18 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After a five-year Ontario Hockey League career with the Brampton/North Bay Battalion franchise, the undrafted Goodrow signed as a free agent with the Sharks. He made his NHL debut during the 2014-15 season.

Meanwhile, Shaun McGuire, a youth baseball coach and president of the Aurora King Baseball Association, and Aurora Community Tennis Club head professional Jordan Master were named co-winners of the Sport Aurora coach of the year award.
