Manchester City’s long winning run in the Premier League ended at 12 matches on Saturday after a 1-1 draw at Southampton, which took points off the leaders for the second time this season.
City needed a 65th-minute header by Aymeric Laporte to earn a point at St. Mary’s, after Southampton took the lead through Kyle Walker-Peters.
Pep Guardiola’s team had won every game in the league since a 2-0 home loss to Crystal Palace on Oct. 30.
• Ruben Neves scored a late goal to give Wolverhampton a 2-1 victory over Brentford in a game interrupted for almost 20 minutes because of a drone that hovered above the field.
Ivan Toney’s volley in the 71st minute offset João Moutinho’s goal for Wolves three minutes into the second half. Moutinho then laid a pass off to Neves, who fired a shot from just outside the box into the bottom right corner in the 78th.
• Marcus Rashford scored in the third and final minute of stoppage time to earn Manchester United a 1-0 win over West Ham that lifted the team above its opponent into fourth place in the Premier League.
• Newcastle claimed just its second Premier League win of the season by beating Leeds 1-0 in a big boost to its ambitions of avoiding relegation.
BASKETBALL
NBA: Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso will have surgery next week to repair his broken right wrist after he was taken down by Grayson Allen during the third quarter of Friday night’s 94-90 loss at Milwaukee.
The team said Caruso will be re-evaluated in six to eight weeks. It’s another tough blow for Chicago (28-16) after it announced Thursday that guard Lonzo Ball needs arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
GOLF
EUROPEAN TOUR: Scott Jamieson stayed on course for a wire-to-wire win at the Abu Dhabi Championship by making birdie at the last hole to retain his one-stroke lead at the end of the third round in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Scottish player, ranked No. 336 and seeking his first title since 2012, shot 4-under 68 and was at 11 under overall in the first European Tour event of 2022 after breaking free of a tie for the lead with Shane Lowry and Thomas Pieters (both 67s).
SKIING
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Dave Ryding became the first British winner in the 55-year history of the Alpine skiing World Cup, triumphing in one of the classic slaloms of the men’s circuit in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Ryding, who was sixth after the opening run, was leading the final leg when he saw the last five racers all make big mistakes and finish well behind – or not at all.
Lucas Braathen, who spectacularly won the slalom in Wengen last week coming from 29th position after the first run, finished 0.38 seconds behind in second, followed by Norwegian teammate Henrik Kristoffersen, who improved from 24th after the opening run.
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: A week after crashing at high speed in Austria, Sofia Goggia captured her fourth win in five World Cup downhills this season in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, despite a mishap-filled run in which the Italian was all over the shortened Olympia delle Tofane course.
Hit by a big gust of wind shortly into her run, Goggia was pushed way wide and had to check her skis to get back into the racing line. A bit further down, she again drifted off course and almost missed a gate. But Goggia regained her speed after each mishap and won by 0.20 seconds ahead of Ramona Siebenhofer of Austria.
Ester Ledecka, the Czech athlete who won golds in both skiing and snowboarding at the 2018 Olympics, finished third, 0.26 behind Goggia.
TRACK AND FIELD
INDOOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Olympic high jump champion Mariya Lasitskene is among 22 Russians given permission to compete in international track and field events as neutrals this year while Russia remains suspended, World Athletics said Saturday.
The decision comes in time for Lasitskene to defend her world indoor championship title in Belgrade, Serbia, next month. Also on the list are Olympic silver medalist pole vaulter Anzhelika Sidorova and world championship bronze medalist high jumper Ilya Ivanyuk.
PREP SCHOOLS
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Natalie Simonds had 13 points, Grace Libby added 12 points and Cam Hamilton finished with 10 points as Berwick Academy defeated Bancroft School 48-31 Friday night in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The Bulldogs won their third-straight road game, improving to 7-2, 4-2 in Eastern Independent League play.
