Lions Player Jack Campbell Hospitalized With Neck Injury After Being Unable to Move on Field
The soccer world is reeling after a devastating accident.
Spain’s Jesús de Miguel, who was a center striker for CD Tenerife, died at the age of 30 after being struck in the chest during the team’s match against FC Andorra on Nov. 2.
“Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats, and unable to believe this is true,” de Miguel’s team shared on their official website Nov. 3, translated from Spanish, “CD Tenerife announces the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.”
The statement continued, “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this profound sense of sorrow. We stand with his devastated family, his loved ones, and the entire Tenerife community, who today mourn this cruel outcome.”
The accident occurred during the last few seconds of the Spanish second division match. While chasing the ball near the field’s halfway line, de Miguel collided with Andorra’s goalkeeper Jesús Owono.
As Owono tried to clear the ball at speed, the goalkeeper—who had moved far out from the goal—accidentally struck de Miguel in the chest with his knee.
