St. James Smokehouse announced a voluntary recall of one of its products on Friday, Sept. 2.
The Miami-based company issued the recall for 93 cases of their 4oz packages of Scotch Reserve Scottish Smoked Salmon over possible Listeria contamination. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause fatal infections in children, the elderly, or people with compromised immune systems. In healthy individuals, an infection can still lead to high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, as well as miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant individuals.
The affected lot number is 123172. These products were distributed to retailers in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Washington State, Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as Safeway Washington State stores and were sold between February and June 2022.
The possible contamination was discovered through routine sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture. No illnesses have been reported up to the time of the recall, but consumers with affected products should still dispose of them or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
