Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa and Sungjae Im highlight the PGA Tour field for the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open, which tees off Thursday at TPC Summerlin. Im won the event last year in Las Vegas, tying the tournament record at 24 under after his 9-under 62 on Sunday to win by four strokes. The South Korean finished second in the Tour Championship to conclude the 2021-22 PGA Tour season and comes off a strong Presidents Cup. He went 2-2-1 but the Internationals lost 17.5-12.5 to a United States team featuring Cantlay and Homa. Cantlay, the highest-ranked player in the Shriners 2022 field at No. 4, won this tournament in 2017 and comes in off a 3-1-0 showing in Team USA’s victory at Quail Hollow. Homa went 4-0-0, a performance that followed his Fortinet Championship victory the previous week. The International team will be well represented in Las Vegas, with South Korea’s Tom Kim, Si Woo Kim and K.H. Lee, Chile’s Mito Pereira and Canada’s Taylor Pendrith among those set to compete.
Cantlay is the 7-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Shriners Children’s Open odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Im (10-1) and Homa (15-1) are the only golfers priced under 20-1, and they are followed by Kim (22-1), Aaron Wise (22-1) and Taylor Montgomery (28-1) in the Shriners Children’s Open 2022 field, according to Caesars. Before making any 2022 Shriners Children’s Open picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald.
After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.
He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.
McDonald hit both of his head-to-head matchup plays at last week’s Sanderson Farms Championship, and long-shot play Dean Burmester just missed cashing in at 66-1. The 33-year-old rookie stormed up the leaderboard on the weekend but ran out of time and finished fourth, just two strokes back.
Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.
Top 2022 Shriners Children’s Open expert picks
One surprise from McDonald: The expert is fading Homa despite his status as one of the clear favorites. The California native has been in excellent form, but he also has struggled mightily at TPC Summerlin in his career. He has missed the cut four times in five outings, finishing 30th the only time he made the weekend. Homa won the Fortinet for the second consecutive year, and he tied for 72nd in his next event last year. He has gone under par five times in his 12 rounds in Las Vegas, and with the winning score likely to be more than 20 under par, that won’t cut it.
Meanwhile, McDonald knows Cantlay can go very low, and he has done that every time he has played in Las Vegas. In addition to his 2017 victory, the 30-year-old has two runner-up finishes and a T-8. He is 70 under par over his four Shriners appearances. His sublime short game sets him up for success on this course. He was 18th in greens in regulation last season (69.3 percent) and eighth in scrambling. That helped him to an average score of 69.468 (sixth on tour) behind 4.44 birdies per round (fifth). He won the BMW Championship at the end of August. See who else to pick here.
