SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Seventeen members of Union College fall teams were recognized for the combined performances in competition and in the classroom with spots on the 2022 College Sports Communicators Fall Academic All-District Teams.
College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) sponsors Academic All-District teams in football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball during the fall season. To be nominated for Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be a starter or significant contributor to their team, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and reach sophomore athletic and academic standing at the school. All Academic All-District honorees automatically advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, the results of which will be announced later in December.
Seniors Joseph Ferreira and Austin St. Pierre of the Union football team led the way, with both players named to the Academic All-District Team for the third time. The pair are only the fifth and sixth players in Union history (all sports) to earn three Academic All-District laurels in a single sport during their career and the first since fellow football player Ryan Ehrets ’21 earned three straight in 2018-20.
The Union women’s soccer team paced all fall sports with the maximum six players represented on the Academic All-District team. Seniors Emma Maley, Abby Mitty and Melissa Murphy, as well as juniors Lizzie Dankert, Meghan Piser and Amanda Sgueglia all earned the honor for the first time in their careers.
The men’s soccer team had five players named Academic All-District for the first time in their careers as well, as seniors Nate Boule and Evan Farr, juniors Robbie Michalski and Sean Speck, and sophomore Wyatt Goldfisher were all recognized.
In addition, the maximum of four Union women’s volleyball student-athletes were recognized this season, with seniors Haley Kresch, Denesha Lafontant and Julia Webster as well as junior Brooke Fleming all picking up their first career Academic All-District honors.
With the 17 honorees, Union student-athletes have now earned 129 Academic All-District honors since 2001, with Union having at least four honorees in all but one year since 2004.
