See the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ cast, then and now

One of the most thrilling heists in film history required one of the starriest casts ever assembled.

Ocean’s Eleven, Steven Soderbergh‘s 2001 caper, turns 25 next year, yet it remains firmly present in the cinematic firmament. A-listers Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are slated to star as the parents of George Clooney‘s Danny Ocean in an upcoming prequel, while Clooney himself is touting a “great script” for a sequel to the trilogy.

And let’s not forget the all-female Ocean’s 8, which grossed nearly $300 million worldwide in 2018.

Star power has always been a staple of the Ocean’s franchise, even going back to its Rat Pack-starring source material. It should come as no surprise, then, that so much of the film’s cast — Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and Don Cheadle, among others — only grew in prominence as the century rolled on, with many working together on projects both in and out of Hollywood.

As we wait for the franchise’s next iteration, let’s check in on where Ocean’s Eleven‘s cast of thieves, hustlers, scammers, and charmers are now.

George Clooney (Danny Ocean)

As smooth-talking thief and heist ringleader Danny Ocean, George Clooney exuded an effortless cool and innate likability that translated across all three Ocean’s films.

The year after Ocean Eleven’s release, the actor directed his first film, the dark and queasy Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002). Throughout the next two decades, he’d direct eight more movies, including Good Night, and Good Luck (2005) and The Boys in the Boat (2023).

In 2006, he launched Smokehouse Pictures with actor and writer Grant Heslov. The company produced several successful projects, including Argo (2012), which scored Clooney a Best Picture Oscar when it dominated the 85th Academy Awards.

Despite his memberships with the United Nations Messengers of Peace and the Council on Foreign Relations, Clooney never stopped acting. In 2005, he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his turn in Soderbergh’s Syriana, and he was nominated three more times for his performances in Michael Clayton (2007), Up in the Air (2009), and The Descendants (2011).

Clooney found himself at the center of political discourse during the 2024 election after penning an op-ed in the New York Times calling for incumbent Joe Biden to exit the race. In the aftermath, Clooney sparred not just with Donald Trump, but also with right-wing media figures like Megyn Kelly.

This year, Clooney made his Broadway debut in a stage adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck, earning a Tony nomination in the process.

He shares two children with his wife, lawyer Amal Clooney, whom he wed in 2014 following his split from actress Talia Balsam.

Julia Roberts (Tess Ocean)

The effervescent Julia Roberts positively twinkled in Ocean’s Eleven as Tess, the scorned ex of Danny. Much to Danny’s chagrin, she’s trying to move on with Andy García’s casino owner, Terry Benedict.

Roberts, who won an Oscar for Erin Brockovich (2000) the year before Ocean’s, continued her hot streak with starring roles in Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Eat Pray Love (2010), and Wonder (2017). In addition to prior Oscar nominations for Steel Magnolias (1989) and Pretty Woman (1990), she scored another nod in 2013 for the film adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play August: Osage County.

The silver-screen icon eventually made her way to TV, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for 2014’s The Normal Heart, which she followed with roles on Amazon Prime’s Homecoming (2018) and Starz’s Gaslit (2022).

This past January, Roberts celebrated the 56th birthday of her husband, Daniel Moder, with a throwback photo of the couple. The pair has three children, including a set of twins.

Brad Pitt (Rusty Ryan)

As the devilish Rusty Ryan, Brad Pitt is rarely seen without a snack in hand. The ying to Danny’s yang, the pair is synonymous with the Ocean’s franchise.

Like Clooney, Pitt followed the success of Ocean’s Eleven by diving headfirst into producing with Plan B Entertainment, which he co-founded in 2001. The company found early success with projects like Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (2006) and Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), both of which were nominated for multiple Oscars.

In the years since Plan B’s founding, three films have won the Academy Award for Best Picture: The Departed, 12 Years a Slave (2013), and Moonlight (2016).

Pitt aimed for box office dominance with 2004’s big-budget Troy, but, as he put it to the New York Times in 2019, the epic’s underperformance caused him to rethink his career. Over the past two decades, the actor has picked his projects carefully, often choosing supporting roles. His performance as daffy himbo Chad Feldheimer in the Coen Brothers’ Burn After Reading (2008), for example, is an essential entry in his oeuvre.

His selectiveness proved fruitful. In the years since Ocean’s Eleven, Pitt has been nominated three times for acting Oscars — for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), Moneyball (2011), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), the last of which landed him a statue.

Most recently, Pitt re-teamed with Clooney for AppleTV+’s Wolfs (2024) and is hyping his lead turn as a Formula One racer in Joseph Kosinski’s F1. His recent producing credits include Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) and Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 (2025).

Last year, Pitt and the actress Angelina Jolie, who were married in 2014, reached a divorce settlement after eight years of legal battles. The settlement arrived after allegations that Pitt physically abused her and their children. The FBI reviewed the case. No charges were filed against Pitt.

Matt Damon (Linus Caldwell)

Matt Damon was still bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when he played the mild-mannered Linus, whose pickpocketing and grifting skills proved to be key to the team’s success.

Until that point, the Oscar winner’s career had been marked by mid-budget hits (The Rainmaker, Rounders) and approachable arthouse fare (Good Will Hunting, The Talented Mr. Ripley), but that was about to change. In 2002, Damon became a bona fide action hero in The Bourne Identity, the first of four Jason Bourne films featuring the actor.

But Damon has proven a versatile performer over the years, appearing in a varied array of comedies (Stuck On You, Downsizing), family films (Happy Feet 2, We Bought a Zoo), and dramas (Behind the Candelabra, Stillwater). He was nominated for acting Oscars in 2010 and 2016 for Invictus and The Martian, respectively.

Damon also continues to work with his Ocean’s crew. He’s appeared in numerous Soderbergh movies in the subsequent years, including The Informant! (2009) and Contagion (2011), as well as Clooney-directed efforts like The Monuments Men (2014) and Suburbicon (2016). He’ll next appear in Christopher Nolan’s star-studded adaptation of The Odyssey.

Along with his old pal Ben Affleck, Damon co-founded Artists Equity, a production company with credits that include Air (2023), Small Things Like These (2024), and this year’s Affleck-starring The Accountant 2.

Damon has been married to his wife, Luciana Bozán, since 2005. The pair has three daughters, as well as another child from Bozán’s previous marriage.

Carl Reiner (Saul Bloom)

Comedy legend Carl Reiner, father of Rob Reiner, played the wily Saul Bloom in all three Ocean’s movies, which is impressive given the actor was nearing 80 when the first film was released.

Despite his age, the Dick Van Dyke Show creator remained busy in the years following Ocean’s Eleven. He put in recurring appearances on costar Bernie Mac’s eponymous TV show (2002–2005), as well as on projects like Two and a Half Men (2009–2014), Hot in Cleveland (2010–2014), and Toy Story 4 (2019).

Beyond his tenure as a comedy writer and actor, Reiner is remembered for collaborating with Steve Martin, having notably directed The Jerk (1979), among other projects.

Reiner died in June 2020 at age 98 from natural causes, leaving behind a career that netted him 11 Emmy Awards, a Grammy, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Elliott Gould (Reuben Tishkoff)

SNL five-timer Elliott Gould appeared in the Ocean’s trilogy and Ocean’s 8 as the dandy Reuben Tishkoff, a moneyed business tycoon with an axe to grind.

The Oscar nominee previously played Capt. Trapper John McIntyre in the film M*A*S*H (1970), starred in The Long Goodbye (1973), and was Jack Geller in Friends (1994–2004), among other notable works. He’s focused more on TV than film over the last few decades, but he appeared in Soderbergh’s Contagion (2011), as well as films like Zoe Kazan’s Ruby Sparks (2012), and reprising his role as Tishkoff in Ocean’s Eight (2018).

On the small screen, he’s recently played supporting roles on Ray Donovan (2013–2016), Mulaney (2014–2015), and Grace and Frankie (2020), and lent his voice to animated series like The Simpsons (2003) and Kim Possible (2003–2007). Currently, he’s a fixture on Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer (2022–present).

Don Cheadle (Basher Tarr)

Don Cheadle appeared in the Ocean’s trilogy as Basher Tarr, a cockney-accented Brit with a knack for heavy artillery.

Cheadle was already a Soderbergh collaborator when he signed onto Ocean’s Eleven, having previously appeared in the director’s Out of Sight (1998) and Traffic (2000). A few years after Ocean’s, he earned an Academy Award nomination for playing hotelier Paul Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda (2004), a movie set amidst the Rwandan genocide.

The actor used the film’s success to bring awareness to genocides being enacted in Darfur and elsewhere. He co-authored a book about the Darfur genocide, Not on Our Watch, with human-rights watchdog John Prendergast, and co-founded the Not on Our Watch Project, an organization working to stop mass atrocities, with his Ocean’s costars Clooney, Pitt, and Damon, among others.

Cheadle appeared in dozens of films and series in the years since, and even joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine. He’s appeared in 10 different Marvel projects as the character.

His work on House of Lies (2012–2016), Black Monday (2019–2021), and Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) netted him seven of his 11 total Emmy nominations. He’s also got two Golden Globes and two Grammys under his belt, as well as a Tony nomination for his work as a producer on the hit musical A Strange Loop.

Most recently, Cheadle starred on Peacock’s 2024 miniseries Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist.

The actor shares two children with his wife, actress Bridgid Coulter.

Eddie Jemison (Livingston Dell)

Eddie Jemison’s only film credit prior to Ocean’s Eleven was in Soderbergh’s deeply strange Schizopolis (1996). He plays tech whiz Livingston Dell in the trilogy.

In the years since, Jemison has appeared in just about every network procedural on TV, from ER (2005) and The Closer (2006) to Criminal Minds (2009) and Grey’s Anatomy (2013) to multiple iterations of CSI. He was a regular on HBO’s Hung (2009–2011), The CW’s iZombie (2015–2019), and Chicago Med (2017–2018).

Jemison reunited with Soderbergh for The Informant! (2009) and would go on to appear in the Veronica Mars film (2014), Todd Phillips’ War Dogs (2016), and Jordan Peele’s Nope (2022).

Scott Caan (Turk Malloy)

he broad-shouldered, tall-haired Scott Caan, son of the late James Caan, played wheelman and surveillance expert Turk Malloy in the Ocean’s trilogy.

Caan chased his turn in Ocean’s Eleven by slipping behind the camera as the writer and director of Dallas 362 (2003) and The Dog Problem (2006). He also wrote and produced the features Mercy (2009) and One Day as a Lion (2023).

As an actor, Caan found success on television. After appearing as ruthless manager Scott Lavin on multiple seasons of Entourage (2009–2011), Caan led CBS’s Hawaii Five-O reboot (2010–2020) as Danny “Danno” Williams, a role that earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

As of late, Caan stars on the Jamie Foxx-created Alert: Missing Persons Unit (2023–present).

Casey Affleck (Virgil Malloy)

As Virgil Malloy, Casey Affleck spent most of the Ocean’s trilogy trading barbs with his onscreen brother, Turk.

Affleck, long a supporting player in movies like Good Will Hunting (1997) and 200 Cigarettes (1999), eventually stepped into the spotlight with leading roles in Steve Buscemi’s Lonesome Jim (2006) and the Pitt-produced The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), the latter of which netted him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

After leading brother Ben Affleck’s Gone Baby Gone (2007) and directing a bizarre mockumentary, I’m Still Here (2010), Affleck won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his gutting turn as a grieving father in Manchester by the Sea (2016).

Affleck’s wins were colored by resurfaced allegations of sexual misconduct from two women who worked with him on I’m Still Here. The women sued Affleck, and both cases were settled out of court in 2010. The actor denies the allegations, but admitted in a 2018 interview that he contributed to an “unprofessional” work environment.

In the years since, he appeared in two David Lowery movies, A Ghost Story (2017) and The Old Man & the Gun (2018), and stole his scenes as the stony Boris Pash in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023) opposite Damon. Last year, he starred alongside Damon once more in Apple TV+’s The Instigators (2024), which he also co-wrote, and appeared in a Dunkin’ Donuts Super Bowl commercial directed by his brother.

Bernie Mac (Frank Catton)

Bernie Mac, who we’d place among the funniest comic actors of the last half-century, starred in the Ocean’s trilogy as fast-talking Frank Catton.

The year of Ocean’s Eleven‘s release also saw the premiere of Fox’s The Bernie Mac Show (2001–2006), which ran for more than 100 episodes and scored Mac two Primetime Emmy nominations.

Mac routinely stole scenes in the comedies of the ’90s, such as Friday (1995) and The Player’s Club (1998). His post-Ocean’s career saw him graduate to leading roles in movies like Bad Santa (2003), Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003), and Mr. 3000 (2004).

In 2008, Mac died at 50 due to cardiac arrest. A testament to his drive to work, three films featuring the actor were released posthumously: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008), Soul Men (2008), and Old Dogs (2009).

Qin Shaobo as the Amazing Yen

Qin Shaobo, a real-life acrobat and contortionist, twisted and scampered across the Ocean’s trilogy and Ocean’s 8 as the Amazing Yen, the team’s “grease man.”

The Ocean’s films are the performer’s only credited onscreen roles, and it’s unclear what he’s up to now, though we know he previously performed with the world-famous Peking Acrobats.

Andy García (Terry Benedict)

Ocean’s big bad is casino owner Terry Benedict, played with the perfect amount of oily malevolence by Oscar nominee Andy García.

García previously rose to fame for Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables (1987) and for playing Vincent Mancini in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part III (1990).

He chased the success of Ocean’s by producing and starring in the Italian biopic Modigliani (2004), as well as co-writing, directing, and starring in The Lost City (2005) alongside Dustin Hoffman and Bill Murray.

He’s worked consistently as an actor in the years since, playing a slew of politicians and authority figures in films like Ghostbusters (2016), Geostorm (2017), Wrath of Man (2021), and Expend4bles (2023).

Another feather in García’s cap? He won a Grammy (and a Latin Grammy) in 2005 for producing ¡Ahora Sí!, an album by Cuban musician Cachao.
