Today at Google I/O 2026, Samsung and Google have unveiled the first Android XR smart glasses, with early designs from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The first audio-glasses collections are scheduled to launch this fall in select markets.

The glasses are designed for common phone tasks when pulling out a phone is inconvenient. Users can get walking directions, send texts, manage calls, hear summaries of missed messages, play music, take photos and videos, translate speech, translate menus and signs, and use Gemini across phone apps.

The audio glasses also work as a hands-free interface for a connected phone or smartwatch. In Google’s on-stage demo, the user asked about missed texts, added a calendar event, and prepared a DoorDash order by voice, with Gemini speaking responses through the glasses while the phone or watch showed the related information.

The glasses can translate spoken conversations in real time and translate written text on menus, street signs, train notices, or parking signs. That makes the product less about XR terminology and more about getting help in ordinary situations without opening a separate app.

There will be two types of intelligent eyewear. Audio glasses arrive first and provide spoken help through the frame. Display glasses will show information in the user’s field of view, such as Uber pickup details, live translations, or glanceable widgets. Google has not announced a launch date for those display models.

The announcement builds on Galaxy XR, Samsung’s headset launched in October 2025 as the first step in the Android XR ecosystem. Google describes Galaxy XR as the first device built on Android XR, an operating system for next-generation headsets and glasses.

Google and Samsung did not share any details on product name, price, battery life, weight, camera specifications, prescription-lens options, or the full list of launch markets. Besides Gemini and Agentic AI, smart XR glasses seem to be a hot topic at Google I/O this year.
