Report: State regulators recommending the cancelation of high-risk sports, including football … unless

Here we go again.

Thanks to delta variant of the coronavirus, high-risk sports — including football — could potentially be in danger of playing in the fall, according to a published report in Rochester’s Democrat and Chronicle.

That’s because the state’s Education Department released a set of reopening guidelines that includes the recommendation of canceling high-risk sports in places where COVID-19 is spreading rapidly, unless all participants have been fully vaccinated.

Yikes!

Fall sports that go under the category of high risk including football, volleyball and competitive cheer.

According to the report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that at least 25 state counties have “had ‘high’ rates of COVID transmission over the last seven days.’’

It should be noted that the state Education regulators’ guidelines have not been mandated. Currently, school districts have the option to decide whether to follow the recommendations or not.

The official start date for fall sports is August 23.

The report said a spokesman for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) “had just received the guidance late Tuesday afternoon and was “unpacking it as we speak.’’ The NYSPHSAA, of course, governs scholastic sports for the state.
