MILWAUKEE — Bryson Mercier of Powers claimed a major victory here Thursday at Brown Deer Golf Club.
Mercier edged good friend Ty Kretz of Marinette by one stroke to win the Wisconsin PGA Junior Championship at the course where Tiger Woods made his first professional start in 1996.
Mercier, who will be a senior at North Central High School, made three key par putts on the back nine and sank birdie putts on nos. 15 and 16 to finish the two-day tournament at 1-under-par 142. He had a sizzling 2-under-par 69 in Thursday’s finale.
Kretz, who has received a golf scholarship from Perkins native Casey VanDamme to play golf at South Dakota State University, finished with a par 71 in his final round and ended with a 143.
The Wisconsin PGA Junior is the largest junior golf tournament in Wisconsin.
