“You have to learn from the mistakes,” Segura said. “The way you respond when you make a mistake is what makes you special.”
The Phillies have been the hottest team in the playoffs, and with every run-scoring hit, double play or strikeout, they look like a team that has one goal in mind. As they sit just two wins away from reaching the World Series, they’ve figured out exactly who they are. The realization couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.
For players like Schwarber who have had several opportunities in the postseason, the experiences can become second mature. But for others like Segura, who is getting his first chance to perform on the playoff stage for the first time since his MLB debut in 2012, he isn’t taking anything for granted. And he isn’t thinking about going home anytime soon.
“I’ve waited 11 years for this opportunity,” he said. “I’m gonna do the best I can to continue to grind and to help the ballclub. I just waited way too many years for the opportunity, and I don’t want to let it go by.”
