LAKE PLACID — Northwood School Friday announced the appointment of Steve Mallaro as the associate head coach of Northwood’s top hockey team. Mallaro joins the staff of Head Hockey Coach Mark Morris.

Mallaro is a 2006 graduate of Northwood School. He was the team captain on the first Northwood hockey team to reach 40 wins under coach Mark Morris.

“As a player, Steve played an honest, hardworking game and always carried the willingness to do things the right way,” Morris said in a statement. “He’s a fun-loving person, and he embodies all the right qualities you’d want from your players: steady, strong, reliable, trustworthy, and committed to excellence. He is a class act and an excellent coach, and there is no doubt that his example will serve the program well.”

Mallaro has had an extensive coaching career following a successful collegiate career at Oswego State University and a minor pro career. He began coaching at Manhattanville College, earning a master’s degree in Sport Business Management. He then joined the College at Brockport for two seasons before being hired at King’s College as the first head coach in program history. Most recently, Mallaro was the head coach at the Albany Academy Prep School.

“Over the years, we’ve stayed in touch sharing a great deal about hockey and life, Morris said. “We see the game through the same lens, and I’m excited that we are reuniting at a place that we are both passionate about to write the next chapter of Northwood hockey.”

Earlier this month, Morris was named head coach to Northwood’s top hockey squad, which this year will be playing in the newly created Prep Hockey Conference that will showcase six of North America’s top school-based programs.

During his 14-year tenure at Clarkson University, Morris won 306 games while losing 156 and tying 42 and was twice ECAC coach of the year. He returned to Northwood in 2004, leading the team to Northwood’s first 40-win season ever. In 2006, he was appointed head coach of the Manchester Monarchs in the AHL. There he posted a record of 339-223-67. After his time at Northwood from 2004 to 2006, he also coached with the Florida Panthers, Charlotte Checkers and St. Lawrence University.

Northwood School is set to resume in-person classes on Sept. 9 with hockey student-athletes onboarding within the next two weeks.
