Memphis vs. SMU prediction and odds for Thursday, March 2

It’s March, but we still have time before the conference tournament in the AAC. Though when it comes around, it looks like the Memphis Tigers will have a top two seed. They are currently 22-7 (12-4) and have two regular season games remaining. The first is tonight against SMU down in Dallas.

Back on January 26, Memphis hosted the SMU Mustangs and took care of business, 99-84. Now, SMU is 10-19 with a 5-11 mark in AAC play. They’re only ahead of Tulsa in the conference standings, but will try to play spoiler and climb a little higher than the 10th seed in the tournament.

Here are the odds for Memphis and SMU.

Memphis vs. SMU odds, spread and total

Memphis vs. SMU prediction and pick

The Memphis Tigers are definitely a Penny Hardaway coached team. They love to get out and run, and are very good at playing in transition. They are 16th in tempo in the nation and because of that they are 24th in points per game, averaging 79.9. They are also very efficient shooting 48.3% from the field which is 20th in the country. Kendric Davis has led the charge by averaging 21.2 points per game and the senior guard makes Memphis very scary in March.

Because of their pace and Davis’s offensive aptitude the Tigers have gone over in 17 of their 29 games. The Mustangs like to get out and run too, which was shown in their 99-84 loss to Memphis back in January. The over is 19-10 in their games. That has more to do with how bad they are on defense than anything they do on the offensive end.

SMU is 307th in opponent scoring and 191st in defensive efficiency. The over is 5-0 in their last five home games and that’s going to be my play tonight.
