AUGUSTA, GA – Rory McIlroy has joined an elite group of just six golfers to have captured all four major championships after defeating Justin Rose in a one-hole playoff on Sunday to capture the 89th Masters Tournament.
In a wild and dramatic day, McIlroy missed the chance to win when he bogeyed the 72nd hole – when a simple par would’ve been enough to capture the green jacket. Instead, the 35-year-old Irishman headed back to the 18th tee alongside Justin Rose. McIlroy made birdie after Rose had to settle for par.
McIlroy now stands with Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods as the only men to win all of golf’s modern major.
