OTR: Massachusetts State Treasurer Deb Goldberg weighs in on political future

now for the OTR pop quiz. And and we’re just gonna, here’s a little sidebar. If there was an OTR pop quiz Hall of Fame, which there should be Deb Goldberg would be right in the OTR home ready to run around, ready to blow it at this point. All right. And I’ll put it all towards having had Covid, I’m not putting any pressure on you, but I went four for four and we rehearsed this. This is the first time I went four for four. Are you ready on the Monopoly Board, Boardwalk and Park place On the monopoly Board. Boardwalk Park place are the most valuable properties. What is the color? And there’s there are options on the screen. Is it light blue? Is it navy blue or is it green? Well it’s definitely blue, but I’m trying to remember whether it’s dark or I think I don’t know why light blue popped in my head, but I’ll change it to navy blue if you want. You are one for one. I’m gonna give you that one. Although that’s answering the question with two answers, but I’m going to give you that one, alexander Hamilton? It is navy blue by the way, alexander Hamilton’s first U. S. Treasury was born on a Caribbean island. Which one was it was it? We’re gonna give you options nevis. Barbados or Jamaica Barbados nevis. Which Saint Kitts and nevis by the way now, So you’re one for two, you are a resident of Brooklyn, as we mentioned the beginning, the show many well known folks have called Brookline Home. So on the screen are three names. One of the names never lived in Brooklyn. Was it o’brien? Was it Walters or was it Pat Sajak? That’s who it is. Pat Sajak. You are now two for three. Last question. Well, no, I’m not going to give it to you now. I know you didn’t. Last question since it is the holiday season. This is yes or no. Holiday season, yes or no. Did massachusetts ever have a treasurer named Ebenezer 50 50 chance of getting it right. The answer is yes. Ebenezer Bradbury 18 49 to 18 51. I purely when I went through the quiz, I purely guessed that one. No, I still got three for four. Okay, back to the serious stuff. The state house, as you know, has remained close despite most other public buildings like boston city Hall, the sports arenas and libraries all opening up. Has the legislature gone too far. Especially since there is a vaccine mandate for nearly all state workers. Well, my office has been open on a hybrid schedule since November one. But before that most many of my essential workers were in all the time. We get the rest of the state house. Opening up the building. Not so much just your department. I believe it. You know, it’s up to the Legislature. They have to make that determination of making the wrong decision though. Well, as of the blizzard of um this particular, I would say for now I would keep it closed. Um, we are going to take a pause on our two days a weekend which every one of my employees has been doing. And we’re taking a pause to MLK weekend where we’ll reevaluate. So we are stepping back. But we are keeping all of the trains on the tracks. We have not missed a beat, but we felt important as public servants that we should be available to the public. It’s a sense we’re ending 2021. We’re heading into 2022 when there’s a big election in the state next year. You have more than hinted that you’re running for re election in 2022. Let’s cover that one first. Are you going to run for reelection? Oh, I don’t think I said that yet. What I said is that I am first of all, we’re looking forward to working with the next governor implies. But I’m really spending time over the holidays talking with my family and friends and ensuring that this is the decision that I make is the correct one. I love what I do. I love making people’s lives better. And in this role, particularly since Covid, we’ve been able to do a tremendous amount of things. I’ve done it locally. I was head of all the treasures of the country during the height of Covid and worked with the U. S. Treasury and D. O. L. And other Department of Labor and others like you’re running? So my next question is, do you have a candidate you’d like to support for governor? Well, you know, I um, will support whoever the Democratic nominee is. But if I’m running for office, you don’t typically end up supporting anyone in the primary. And the most important thing is that no matter who is governor, we collaborate because our offices do an enormous amount of work that impacts the economic stability in our state. And so it’s critical that it’s a collaborative relationship. You brilliantly maneuvered your way through that one. That was excellent. I’m glad you’re well, it’s great to see you. You look thanks again and happy New Year. Happy New Year, everyone thanks again. Dave Goldberg for being in the chair this morning.
