Maryland’s men’s lacrosse team came up just short vs. Virginia in the National Championship Game game on Monday, losing 17-16.

The Terps were behind for most of the game, but made a comeback after getting behind 15-11. Trailing 17-15 for the final few minutes, Maryland scored a goal with 10.8 seconds remaining to cut the margin half.

Maryland then won the ensuing face-off, resulting in a chaotic sprint toward the Cavaliers’ goal in the final seconds. However, the final shot was blocked and Virginia emerged victorious.

Here’s the final play:

Maryland was seeking to become the first undefeated National Champion since the Cavs accomplished that feat in 2006. Instead, the Terps finished the season with a record of 15-1.

Virginia has now won consecutive national titles, becoming the first program to do that since Duke in 2013 and 2014.

Maryland has now finished as the national runner-up five times since 2011. The Terps also won it all in 2017.
