For the second time this week, the Marin Catholic High girls volleyball team made alarmingly short week of a traditional Northern California powerhouse.
After dispatching Campolindo comfortably in three sets on Tuesday, the Wildcats dominated Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday, 25-4, 25-16, 25-11. Sacred Heart advanced to the NorCal Open Division semifinals in 2019, losing to Bishop O’Dowd. Marin Catholic then defeated Bishop O’Dowd to make it to the state title game that year.
Grace Oliva paced MC with 10 kills. Brooke Brilliant added eight kills and Kelsey Ramsey had six.
- Ruby Kuerschner had 29 assists and four aces to guide Terra Linda to a 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 victory against Sonoma Valley. Audrey Nelson had a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Olivia Quinby had 11 kills and a pair of blocks for TL.
- Lin Borland had 13 digs and 20 service points and Marin Academy swept past El Cerrito, 25-19, 25-9, 25-23. Kayla Saxon and Kate Lane combined for 12 kills for the Wildcats (7-2).
- Emma McDermott and Brooke Leslie posted double-digit kills for Redwood in a losing effort in Friday as the Giants fell in four sets against Cardinal Newman. McDermott had 11 kills, four digs and two aces while Leslie posted 10 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Katelyn McKnew had six blocks, three kills and a pair of aces for the Giants. Jordan Vasquez had 19 assists and five digs. Sophia Shaw had 10 digs, three aces and three assists.
Women’s volleyball
Tiff Wong paced Dominican in both games on Friday as the Penguins fell in three sets against Cal State East Bay and in four sets against Cal State Monterey Bay.
Wong had five kills against East Bay and nine kills against Monterey Bay. The Penguins won the first set against Monterey Bay before dropping the next three. Setter Haley Frederking had 33 assist across the two games. Vanna Marquez had 13 digs against Monterey Bay.
- COM remained unbeaten in the young season after rallying for a 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 15-11 victory against Santa Rosa. The Mariners (3-0) feature three Marin-based players on their roster in Rachel Reher (TL), Kylie Boutet (Novato) and Remy Pelzman (Drake/Archie Williams).
Boys water polo
Dante Scarzella, Cooper Thelen, Derek Bartram and Cole Morris scored three goals apiece as Novato blitzed Ukiah 26-4 on Friday night.
Men’s soccer
Brennan Blondin continued his torrid pace to start the season, netting three times to lead College of Marin to its first win in three tries — a 9-0 drubbing of Chabot.
Blondin has scored six goals in three games for the Mariners (1-1-1), who got two goals apiece from Wilson Barahona, Duran Perez and Luke Mai. Former Terra Linda standout Aly Alvarado assisted on the first goal of the game.
Women’s soccer
COM rallied by scoring the final three goals of the game to win its season opener, 3-2, against Chabot on Friday. Former TL standout Yuliana Velasquez Signor scored the game-winning goal. Emily Berganza and Cyrene Perez also found the back of the net for the Mariners (1-0-0).
- Dominican put six of its 12 shots on frame but settled for a 0-0 tie against Humboldt State in its season opener on Friday. Goalie Jacqueline Catano had a pair of saves to earn the clean sheet.
