Marin Catholic upsets Terra Linda in the pool

Thea Falvey scored four goals, including the eventual game winner, as Marin Catholic outlasted top-seeded Terra Linda, pulling out a 6-4 victory in the second overtime at Redwood High on Wednesday.

The No. 4 Wildcats advance to the Division II title game on Saturday against either No. 2 Carondelet or No. 6 Justin-Siena.

The game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation and 4-4 after the first overtime. Falvey put the Wildcats ahead 5-4 and Hannah Slaught, who scored the other two goals, ended an insurance score.

“Thea by far is the quarterback of our team,” MC coach Sophie Waldron said. “We don’t win that game without Thea in the pool. … (Goalie Noelle Antongiovanni) has been playing water polo for a couple of months and she came up huge for us tonight. I don’t think we win that game without Noelle, either.
“We have improved so much. We’re playing the best water polo we can play at the exact right time in the season.”

  • Archie Williams was eliminated in the D-I semifinals following a 13-8 loss to No. 2 Las Lomas on Wednesday.

Girls volleyball

The Branson School girls volleyball team climbed out of a two-set hole and almost completed the comeback against No. 2 seed Archbishop Mitty in the Open Division playoffs.

The No. 7 Bulls fell behind 18-25, 19-25, in the first two sets before tying it up at 2-2 by winning 25-17 and 25-22. Mitty was able to close out the game with a 15-12 fifth set. Stats were not available at press time.

  • Marin Catholic also suffered a season-ending loss in the Open Division playoffs, falling at home against No. 8 St. Francis. The Wildcats won the fourth set, 25-15, but fell 15-11 in the fifth set. Stats were not available at press time.

Girls tennis

Jordan Marotto led the way with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles as No. 4 Redwood swept aside No. 13 Alameda in the first round of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs on Wednesday.

The Giants also got singles wins from Sonya Cowan, Annesley Krawitt and Julia Laury at Nos. 2-4 singles, respectively.

Georgia Harms teamed up with Pia Ong Bamola to pick up the win at No. 1 doubles.

Redwood is set to host a quarterfinal at 2 p.m. on Thursday against either No. 5 Miramonte or No. 12 Tam.

  • Marin Academy pulled off a first-round upset, sweeping past No. 7 Salesian 7-0 on Wednesday. The Wildcats advance to face No. 2 Branson in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. on Thursday at College of Marin.
    Freshman Eloise Sent and Amelia Thomas plus juniors Cat Agarwal and Elsa Madsen won singles matches for MA. Sasha Grewal and Tori Bradley secured the decisive win at No. 3 doubles.
  • Marin Catholic’s season came to an end following a 4-3 loss against Head-Royce at Novato High in the first round of the D-II playoffs.

Boys water polo

The Marin Academy boys water polo team advance to the NCS D-II championship game following a 7-4 victory against Piedmont on Wednesday.

The second-seeded Wildcats advance to Saturday’s title game against No. 1 Northgate. Connor Dickinson again led the way with four goals for MA.

  • Quin Concannon scored six times to pace Tam but No. 2 Acalanes was able to emerge from the second overtime with a 14-12 win in the NCS D-I semifinals.
    Aydan Yates and Reed Hanna both scored twice for the Red-tailed Hawks. Hanna and Gabriel Hirner both had a team-high three assists. Goalie Fargo Barsotti made 12 saves.
