LUDHIANA: After waiting for over three months, the new fire tenders and other upgraded gadgets were finally handed over to the Ludhiana fire officials on Saturday when the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu dedicated modernized and advanced firefighting and rescue infrastructure to the city.
Under smart city mission, Rs 3.28 crore has been spent on purchasing hi-tech equipment, including new mini fire tenders, materials, emergency lights and others.
For helping the fire brigade officials in dousing the flames in narrow lanes of the city, four fabricated Tata Yodha fire tenders worth Rs 88.64 lakh have been purchased. The fire officials claimed that in the city, there are many such areas that are difficult to reach due to congestion, but these small fire tenders will help in dousing the fire with water and foam in these areas. Hi-tech pumping systems have been installed in these four vehicles.
Two Royal Enfield bullet motorcycles equipped with advanced firefighting technology have been handed over by the director of the local bodies department. But fire officials claimed that these bikes were of not much use. “We already had two such bikes but they were hardly ever used,” they said.
Apart from this, three life detectors (Rs 66.02 lakh) for rescue operations during disasters were also handed over. These detectors can sense humans if buried under collapsed buildings.
As many as 10 battery operated combi tools (Rs 69.50 lakh) have also been provided to the fire bridge department which would help in carrying out rescue operations smoothly. These tools can be used for cutting and spreading works easily at the sites.
Five portable inflatable emergency lights have also been bought at the cost of Rs 11.74 lakh.
Five thermal imaging cameras worth Rs 41.79 lakh have been provided to the fire brigade to see through smoke, monitor the fire and assist in better planning to control the fire, especially major hotspots.
Five aluminium firefighting suits worth Rs 51 lakh have been purchased for the firemen to handle any fire incident easily with more resistance to the high temperature.
Smart city ranking improved from 54 to 37
Due to several projects in the proposal and execution stage, the smart city ranking has improved from 54 to 37. The officials claimed that they can jump many more ranks once the work of the Rs 650 crore Buddha Nullah rejuvenation project starts.
Fire fighters demand more staff and fire stations
Though fire fighters expressed happiness after getting more fire tenders and upgraded material, they claimed that there is acute shortage of staff in the fire department and unless more workers are recruited, they won’t be able to use anything. “The staff in the fire brigade department should not be on a contractual basis as they do not know whether they will return home safely when they visit any fire spot,” they said.
They also said that fire stations are required as the city has grown and five fire stations are not enough for the city.
