UK labour productivity, a key measure for future wage growth and living standards, fell in the first quarter, posting the weakest annual growth since 2009, bar from the pandemic, according to official statistics.

Output per worker and per job fell at an annual rate of 0.9 per cent and 1 per cent in the first quarter, the weakest annual growth for both measures since the third quarter of 2009, excluding the coronavirus pandemic period of 2020-21, according to data published on Friday by the Office for National Statistics.

Output per hour worked, another measure of productivity, decreased by 0.6 per cent compared with the same quarter last year, the weakest rate since Q1 of 2013, excluding 2020-21.
