Roll up your sleeves and pop open some bags: Lay’s Do Us a Flavor contest is here.
The snack brand asked fans to submit their wackiest and most delicious chip flavor ideas in October 2024, seven years after they had last held the competition. On Wednesday, April 9, three finalists have been announced and PEOPLE has the exclusive.
Lay’s Bacon Grilled Cheese potato chips come from Paula George in Sapulpa, Okla. The snack is meant to taste like the nostalgic, toasted sandwich and was inspired by George’s late father’s recipe.
Neelia Lynn from Chesterfield, Va. came up with the idea for Lay’s Wavy Korean-Style Fried Chicken potato chips. The textured chips are inspired by her family’s time in South Korea and has some spice and sweetness, just like the street food inspo, according to a press release.
One of the three flavor finalists uses a particular name brand: Lay’s Valentina and Lime potato chips. San Jose resident Araceli Huerta chip idea pays homage to her mother’s favorite snack. She would toss Lay’s Classic potato chips with Valentina hot sauce (a spicy sauce made with puya chilis and manufactured in Guadalajara, Mexico) and lime juice.
These three flavors aren’t going to be available forever. From Monday, April 21, through Friday, June 13, fans can purchase the chips at retailers nationwide and vote for their favorite at DoUsAFlavor.com.
Voting wraps in mid-June and the results will be announced later in 2025, and no one walks away empty-handed. The two runners-up win $50,000 and the grand prize winner will take home $1 million.
The contest has come and gone since it started in 2012. During the first four competitions in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017, the snack brand received millions of submissions and crowned four winners. Cheesy Garlic Bread won in 2012, Kettle-Cooked Wasabi Ginger took the cake in 2014, Southern Biscuits and Gravy was crowned in 2015 and Crispy Taco was the top dog in 2017.
