Kevin has collaborated with fellow Mexico-based correspondent Mary Beth Sheridan to produce a powerful run of eye-opening work, including “Losing Control,” the five-part series about the deterioration of security in Mexico that won the 2020 Overseas Press Club’s Bob Considine award for best interpretation of international affairs. Over the past year, their courageous reporting on Mexico’s role in the drug trade was central to “Cartel Rx,” the seven-part cross-departmental series on the failure of the United States and Mexico to counter the scourge of fentanyl. Individually, he has also produced outstanding work, such as his immersive reporting, in text and audio, on the aching toll of Trump-era family separations and the absurdist world of Mexican bounty hunters competing to track down U.S. fugitives.
Kevin, with his reporting from Afghanistan, Africa and Mexico, has demonstrated remarkable versatility, tenacity and initiative. A marathoner, he spent two grueling days running alongside one of Mexico’s greatest athletes, Germán Silva, as the two-time New York City Marathon champion ran the length of his country to showcase its beauty and diversity. (Kevin has called this one of his favorite stories ever.) It was Kevin who proposed this new assignment covering sports, so that he can use his investigative and narrative skills to bring greater accountability to the athletes, federations and other power brokers that dominate international sport.
Kevin earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and comparative literature from Brown University and is one long-postponed exam away from a master’s degree in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He speaks Spanish and is learning French.
In his new role, Kevin will be part of the team headed by Peter Finn, the senior editor for international investigations. Peter and Kevin will coordinate with Joe Tone and other editors in Sports as we broaden the scope and ambition of our investigative efforts. Kevin will remain in Mexico through the end of 2023 before moving to a new international location.
