Kevin Hart may be excelling in his career, but the main thing on his mind is being the “best example possible” to his four children.
While speaking with PEOPLE at the New York City premiere of Apple TV+’s Number One on the Call Sheet, the producer and actor, 45, opens up about his fatherhood journey. The father of four tells PEOPLE that he prays that all of the “crash courses” he gives his children are steering them in the right direction.
“I just can hope and pray that I’m being the best example possible,” the Lift star tells PEOPLE. “I think as parents we all give crash courses and what we deem to be education or great direction. You can only hope that your kids are picking up as much as you’re putting down.”
“It all does click at a certain time for children, especially as they become young adults,” he continues. “You can hope when it’s all said and done … that all that information comes into play at some point. I can just hope and pray that the example that I think I’m being is the example that I really am being and all my time and all my energy that I’m throwing to them on a day to day is not going unnoticed.”

The Think Like A Man alum shares his older children, son Hendrix, 17, and daughter Heaven, 19, with his ex-wife, Torrei Hart. After splitting from Torrei in 2011, Hart married Eniko Hart. They went on to welcome daughter Kaori, 4, and son Kenzo, 7. At the premiere, he tells PEOPLE that above all else, he simply wants his kids to be happy.
“I think I have very good kids, well-mannered kids, but most importantly happy kids. My kids are very happy with life. They’re happy with love, and that love that they’re happy with is love that they try to give others,” he says. “I hope that that stays true and I hope they stay consistent.”
Although having four kids (and a couple of dogs) at home can make the house feel “loud,” the comedian wouldn’t have it any other way. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2021, Hart said he’s in “love” with being a parent.
“We’re in love with being parents, we’re in love with all the little ones that we have now. I mean, we got teenagers and two toddlers, man. It’s the perfect separation of age,” Hart shared with the outlet. “It’s the perfect household. It’s everything that you would think it is plus more.”
After a perspective-changing moment came to him after his 2019 car accident, in which he suffered major back injuries and endured a long recovery process, Hart called his physical and mental transformation after the crash a “resurrection” in an interview for the March 2020 issue of Men’s Health. The Lil Kev creator explained that his recovery process has led him to “do better” and prioritize his family more often.
“I’m not trying to get back to where I was before — I want to be better than before,” Hart explained to the magazine. “It’s a resurrection. That’s the best way for me to put it. I feel like the other version of myself died in that moment and this new version was born to understand and to do better.”
“When s— hits the fan, you’re going to realize that the things that matter are all you truly care about,” he continued. “Now I’m doing a lot of little things that are important. I’m sitting with the kids before and after dinner. We are doing Taco Tuesdays, Mexican food Thursdays, Chinese food Sundays. We got movie night twice a week. Now I’m walking my f—ing dog. I’m picking up dog s—.”
Number One on the Call Sheet streams on Apple TV+ beginning March 28.
