Valley Art Gallery features Koonce; Tivenan on June 15
Plein air artist Debby Koonce is the current featured painter at the Valley Art Gallery, 1661 Botelho Drive. Her paintings are fresh depictions of shadows, sunlight, atmosphere and color resulting in a feeling of realism heightened by imagination. She is inspired by vistas, architecture, quaint alleyways, gated compounds and garden settings. Koonce has developed a love for painting outdoors, where she is challenged and energized by the changing light of the passing day.
On June 15, Dee Tivenan will become the new featured artist with her show titled “Layers of the Heart.” She works in a style that is gestural, colorful and appears nonobjective but which nonetheless often contains a landscape reference. Her paintings are composed with multiple layers, ensuring a rich texture and she sometimes combines different mediums.
Also on display are more than 300 works of original art from the best of the best East Bay artists that are also available for sale or rent-to-purchase through the gallery’s exclusive “No Regrets” rental program. ‘Jaws’ next up in classic film series June 12 at El Campanil
The Campanil Classic Film Series will feature the 1975 film “Jaws” at 2 p.m. June 12 in El Campanil Theatre at 602 W. Second St. The film that has kept thousands of people out of the ocean for more than 40 years will be back on the big screen, just in time for summer. Boasting a top-notch cast, expertly tense direction and one of the most threatening John Williams scores ever composed, this classic directed by Steven Spielberg stars Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw. Three theater troupes unite to present classic musical
Get ready for live theater again! After a year without live performances, Pittsburg Community Theatre will produce “Company,” along with Ghostlight Theatre Ensemble and Pinole Community Players.
The Stephen Sondheim musical classic will be in Pittsburg, Brentwood and Rodeo over three consecutive weekends in June. It opens June 11-13 outside at Church of the Good Shepherd Spiritual Park, 3200 Harbor St. in Pittsburg, followed by June 18-20 at Four Fools Winery, 13 Pacific Ave. in Rodeo, and June 25-27 indoors at Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak St.
“We’ve all waited so long for a return to a bit of normalcy,” Ghostlight’s Jennifer Finetti said. “This production means so much to those of us involved in live community theater and also means so much to our supporters.”
“Company” is a 1970s musical dark comedy that was recognized with a record-setting 14 Tony Award nominations, with six wins, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics and Best Book. It was also one of the first musicals to deal with adult themes and relationships. As the story goes, on the night of his 35th birthday, a confirmed bachelor, Bobby, contemplates his unmarried state.
Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks and even a wedding, his married friends discuss the pros and cons of taking on a spouse. The habitually single Bobby is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood. Tickets are $20 each for all performances. Delta Gallery Community Art Center hosts two shows
Delta Gallery Community Art Center is holding two shows at its venue in the Streets of Brentwood. The first is a second-quarter show from the Art Guild of the Delta with painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry. The second is “Bright Days Ahead,” a vibrant collection of artwork showcasing local talent from participants of the P.A.I.N.T. program, a Brentwood-based creative arts day program for visionary adults with intellectual challenges.
Among the works featured in the second show are whimsical landscapes and colorful abstract paintings offering a glimpse into the creative minds, imaginations and experiences of P.A.I.N.T. artists. The group’s goal is to help each person reach his or her highest level of artistic achievement and to encourage personal growth, self-reliance and self-esteem through the creative process.
Art classes also are resuming at the Delta Gallery. Adults and teens can sign up for “Oil Expressions” oil painting workshops with Carol Ligon, and watercolor workshops with Gregg Holzhauer. Jayne Tucker is scheduling her popular Afternoon Tea and Strings workshops for later this spring with a fun macramé wall hanging project. Another popular ongoing workshop is Open Studio, classroom studio time for self-directed artists hosted by Jo Olney.

Lynn House Gallery reopening exhibits features 14 artists
After months of being closed, the Lynn House Gallery recently reopened with a show of 14 area artists that will continue through July 11. Watercolor artist McNally to demonstrate seascapes
The Alamo Danville Artists Society will presents a pastel watercolor demonstration by artist Samantha McNally from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. June 8 at the Alamo Women’s Club, 1401 Danville Blvd. Bay Area watercolor artist McNally paints in the studio and outdoors “en plein air.”
“I started painting in oils in college, then tried out acrylics for a while. I participated in art shows where most of the people painted in watercolors, and the effects were so beautiful I had to try it. I took a few classes in the ‘90s and have been painting in watercolor ever since.”
McNally is a member of The California Watercolor Association, and her paintings hang in the Valley Art Gallery in Walnut Creek and in Benicia. She will demonstrate painting seascapes at the meeting. Visit her website for more info at samanthamcnally.com.
