EXCLUSIVE: Blacktop International has unveiled first images of Alyssa Sutherland (Evil Dead Rise) and Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) in Australian director Kurt Martin’s The Room Below as it launches sales at the AFM having recently acquired worldwide rights.
The movie stars Sutherland as acclaimed children’s book author Mia who is grieving the loss of her son and forms a connection with a young boy, played by Gilbert Bradman (Transfusion, The Twelve)), who resembles the child she lost.
But as a mysterious creature begins to stir within her home and strange events grow harder to explain, her fragile sense of reality draws the attention of a retired detective (Meyers) searching for answers of his own.

The cast also features Bobby Gilchrist (The Invisible Raptor), Lauren Grimson (Sissy, Love and Monsters), and Goran D. Kleut (Alien: Covenant, Hacksaw Ridge) round out the cast.
The film is produced by Jim Robison of Lunar Pictures, Chris Chard of CME, and Ty Linegar. Executive producers include Marc Furmie, Colin Bates, Adam Cullen, Phil Hunt and Jaime King (Sin City, Black Summer).
This marks the second feature from writer-director Kurt Martin following his acclaimed debut Moon Rock for Monday, which premiered at the Zurich Film Festival and was nominated for Best Film at the AACTA Awards.
Lunar Pictures, based in Australia‘s Byron Bay, is also producing the upcoming feature Switzerland, directed by Anton Corbijn and starring Helen Mirren, Alden Ehrenreich, and Olivia Cooke.
“We’re thrilled to partner with JD Beaufils and Blacktop International on this project. Their passion and reach make them the ideal team to bring The Room Below to audiences worldwide,” said director Martin and producer Robison.
Blacktop International founding head JD Beaufils said he had first come across The Room Below at the project stage at last year’s AFM.
“When I got the chance to meet Jim and look at some of the footage I made it a priority of acquiring a film that marries the best elements of an elevated psychological horror that goes to frighteningly dark places, has stellar performances by well-known cast and also expert filmmaking from visionary director Kurt Martin,” he said.
The Room Below is currently in post-production and is slated for release sometime in 2026.
